How the fuck did that happen anyways? Valve just randomly decided to make a post praising Minecraft for no reason... that's unprecedented. It could have happened espontaneously, but maybe they had a deal? Maybe someone at Mojang knew someone at the tf2 team? I don't know, it is just really weird.

I think it was the result of a large amount of people on the tf2 team playing a ton of minecraft, which resulted in them writing a post about that strangely addicting game in the tf2 blog.

why are they even a thing though, can anyone offer me an adequate psycho-social explanation for a collective of people making money from videos of themselves playing minecraft, a game i don't have the patience to watch myself play

people make money of themselves playing league of legends, and starcraft. basically it works like this: if there is a thing that is popular, people will pay not only for that popular thing itself, but for anything surrounding or related to that popular thing. sometimes the things surrounding that popular thing make more money than the popular thing itself. example: the transformer toys made more money than the actual transformers cartoon

Roughly, there's not nearly the same amount of money in being an internet celebrity as there is in brand product sales, but it gives the person who is in those videos many chances to appear in places via paid gigs or eventually get a job somewhere related to what he or she did in the videos.

Alledged features (aka wish-list):

-Beautiful, randomly-generated game worlds that are different every time you start a new Yogventure

-Fully shapeable terrain - with the ability for players to raise a mountain range or create a vast ocean; you can effortlessly shape your world however you imagine it

-A wealth of novel building materials, creatures, NPCs and items

-A rich underground to mine and explore - bristling with rare outcroppings of gems and crystals, hidden tombs and dark underground terrors that drop rare weapons and loot

-A fully-fleshed out crafting system

-An in-game physics engine that will even effect the blocks you place in your creations

-The ability to customise your own unique avatar or play as one of your favourite Yogscast characters

-Easy-to-use in-game modding API including in-game scripting

-Ability for modders to have a chance to get their work added to the game

-Regularly released video updates from the developers including the latest feature additions

A bit ambitious i would say. How many people will be working on this and for how long.
$250,000 isnt that much money. Not a very realistic roadmap i would say, unless its 6 guys in a basement living off ramen noodles and rainwater, working on geothermally powered computers.

A brief introduction to the Yogscast:

  • The "stars" are Simon and Lewis (aka Honeydew and Xephos). But a number of other people are involved behind the scenes and occasionally appearing in videos.
  • It started as a series of boss guide videos for World of Warcraft. They were notable for not being particularly good at explaining the boss fight, instead having inane and amusing (or tiresome, depending on your opinion) chatter.
  • The name is from the guild they were members of, "Ye Old Goonsquad". In turn that was so named because it was made up primarily of members of the Something Awful forums, who are known as "goons".
  • Their first burst in popularity came when they made videos of the Wrath of the Lich King beta. As with their boss guides, they were notable for being a playful look through the content rather than a more serious dissemination of information.
  • Second major burst in popularity was with their Minecraft videos. What makes their videos different from the vast majority is that they only "properly played" Minecraft for the first handful of videos (punching trees, building a house, all that). The focus of their videos quickly shifted to a developing adventure with mysterious buildings and other characters appearing. This ongoing story became known as the Shadow of Israphel.
  • They continue to produce Minecraft videos showcasing patch changes, mods and "adventure maps". It's the adventure map theme that is seemingly the focus of their proposed game.
  • They also make videos of playing a bunch of other games, especially the betas of upcoming multiplayer titles.

I had no interest in their WoW or Minecraft videos but now I watch a lot of their GW2 beta coverage, just because they have so much of it.
