I haven't been on here or worked on the game in a few days, but I'm going to start again and take everyone's feedback into account.

Something no one has mentioned yet: How is the game performing for you all? I get an inconsistent framerate on my main OS X partition and a downright terrible one on my Windows partition and I can't figure out what's causing that.

Excellent core concept.

I would definitely add some sort of powerup or collectible to encourage less defensive play.

Later stages could involve diagonal shooters. Same idea but when they hit the shield the bullet ricochets accordingly.

Finally, I would allow people to adjust bullet speed/frequency. This would make it easier for beginners and allow experts to increase the challenge level.

Definitely continue work on this.

Don't know, but I get ~1-3% CPU useage here on my Core i7 920.

I liked the game quite a bit.  Nice concept and nicely challenging.  My one issue would be that it felt a bit awkward using Arrows to move and WASD for shield, since I'm used to moving with my left hand and doing actions (normally shooting, but in this case shielding) with my right.  It threw me off to the extent that at first I thought the directions themselves were reversed.  Other than that, nice job, and I'd like to see the concept expanded on.

Fun concept!  I think I'd prefer the arrows continue facing and shooting in one direction(?).  It would also be nice to get some fore-warning before a ship moves since they quickly move in bursts.  Otherwise, maybe it would work equally well for them to drift at a more constant speed.

That is really fun. It reminded me of Asteroids without being a knockoff. What about adding different enemies, or some sort of environmental obstacles or complications? Maybe lasers (vertical, diagonal, horizontal) that split the screen up, occasionally limiting the movement of the player.

One of the things I like is that I have never played a game with a force shield where you use it aggressively, in the way this game encourages you to. Fun.

So it turns out when I said that I would go back to working on this, what I really meant was I was going to procrastinate for a month and a half and not work on it at all.

However, I finally got back to it!

Here is a new build with a few improvements, most notably a box that keeps the player from camping the edges (in theory) and a new super shield powerup thing.

  Mock Anger

It was really simple and really fun. I found myself playing over and over and there were so many oh crap moments- something I don't really get in games anymore.

Hi,

Nice game !

I found it kind of difficult, maybe because the large borders leave only a small field to play in.

Thought it was pretty fun though, I played it a couple of times. I really like how it's core gameplay is very simple but fun !

i LOVE IT   Hand Shake LeftWaaagh!Hand Shake Right

my highest score is 17 so far i need to get to bed but this is too fucking addicting lol!

but pls get rid of the sliding/skidding it's really annoying especially if you want to destroy close by enemies

also, probably make the enemy spawn much more visible? (or is that part of the difficulty)

i'd love to make pixel art for this if you want to Smiley

EDIT: now it's 24! btw, you MIGHT wanna change the name it's too generic but i love the music!

RE EDIT: are there ships that shoot 2 consecutive shots? i want more info on that or possibly convey it in their appearance. also, i totally hate the spawn in my face thing that always seems to happen (mainly because i don't see the ships actually spawning too much because it just fades in)

RE RE EDIT: too addicted got 30 now must sleep thanks for the lovely game

I played a few times and got to 49.  It was decently fun.  It needs a little more depth, perhaps with more enemy types.

Most of the time I died because I tried to slip through an enemy as it spawned to reflect its first shot.  It doesn't seem terribly hard to be able to keep killing them as they spawn.  Sometimes a few pile up (they spawn outside the box and not facing in or they have the reflect shield, so they take longer to kill) but a nuke clears them.

Definitely a lot harder now with the border in place.

I would suggest making fixed waves of enemies and different enemy types, similar to that Space Dudes game I made.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! It's so awesome to hear that people are enjoying it. The majority of people seem to be having a problem with enemy spawning not being obvious enough and the actual pacing of said spawns, so those will be what I work on next.

are there ships that shoot 2 consecutive shots? i want more info on that or possibly convey it in their appearance.

No, that's not supposed to happen. I'm not sure what's going on there. Can you clarify what you mean by that?

I often let go of the shield once i reflect the enemy's attack because I don't like holding on the shield without any enemy. Normally after I reflect the first shot another shot comes right at me for some reason and I die because I let go of the shield button earlier  Durr...?

That's happening because in the time it took for you to reflect the bullet back, the enemy fired another one. I thought I had something in place so that wouldn't happen, but I guess it's not working.
