On another note, sometimes with nostalgia it isn't so much that the "times" have changed as it is that your life has changed and games don't have the same relevance to your life as they once did (for better or worse).

Also your perspective on video games may have changed due to your involvement with the creation of games. It is kind of like watching magic shows after you've been studying how the magic tricks work. You become disillusioned with what you are seeing now but you still remember the emotional impact and wonder magic shows instilled in you when you were young which is why they seem more impressive when you look back.

Have you ever had the feeling that some people are never talking about videogames, but always about themselves? The videogame talk is incidental, the goal is to be seen as a certain type of guy.
I have this feeling with gimmy and that guy who argued with me at the good character designs thread.

(But since these people are people I strongly disagreed with here, maybe the problem is me.)

It goes a little somethin' like this:

>Attempt to make valid, legitimate, and thoughtful points
>Everyone automatically dismisses anything I have to say because I'm phubans
>Engage full troll mode, everyone flips their shit
>Reinforce the notion that I should never be taken seriously

But in all serious, yeah you guys are mostly right about a lot of things. Now if you don't mind me, *puts nostalgia glasses back on* ... it... it's beautiful.

The reason that nobody takes you seriously is because you say shit like "Everyone automatically dismisses anything I have to say because I'm phubans."

In reality, it's more like this:

>Attempt to make invalid, over-generalized, and inciteful points
>Everyone replies with valid, legitimate, and thoughtful points
>Automatically dismiss anything anyone else has to say because I'm phubans
>Act like everyone was just dismissing my points because I'm phubans
>Engage lol-i-was-trolling-you mode, possibly flip my shit
>Reinforce the notion that I should never be taken seriously

It's a vicious cycle

I for one would be making the same arguments regardless of who's the one being overly nostalgic.

Have you ever had the feeling that some people are never talking about videogames, but always about themselves? The videogame talk is incidental, the goal is to be seen as a certain type of guy.

I think I know what you're getting at, and to a degree I agree with you, but I think we're all like that in one way or another about one thing or another. I don't think it is so much a goal of trying to be seen as a certain type of guy as it is the internet makes it easy to go from being a person with an opinion to a Google-forged expert.

In person if you reach a point where you can't think of something to back up your end of the argument with it kind of puts you in a position where you have to stop and consider why that is (at least it does if you are a rational individual). On the internet, when your point is running out of steam you can just quickly pop on to Google or Wikipedia or whatever and you're bound to find something that will keep it going. It keeps that train of thought moving forward so fast you forget where it is supposed to be going and why it is going there.

I know, at least in the case of Gimmy, he cares a lot about the craft and it occasionally leads to him sending out opinions like a battering ram or sends his train of thought off the rails but ultimately he has a lot of interesting viewpoints and if you can be patient enough to try and understand what he's getting at you'll find there is a lot of food for thought there. That doesn't mean you'll agree with him, of course, but it does give you something to think about.

I find the same is true of just about any member here that isn't responding with "ur a fagot lolz".

With Phubans I find that, at least on here, he reminds me of a friend of mine. My friend doesn't have a filter between thought and speaking, how ever something comes to his mind is exactly and immediately how it will leave his mouth. Some of the shit he says I am like "What the fuck!?" because it sounds so crass and belligerent but if you give what he's saying a little time to soak in there is a valid point there (or at least some kind of point there lol).

In this particular case I think I understand what Phubans is getting at, because even though I know better (there is plenty of variety in modern games and the games now are just as good as they've been in the past) I still feel it from time to time. I find myself hearing music on the radio and thinking "Back when I was a teenager music was way better...". All the music, games, art, etc. I grew up on shaped the sensibilities and tastes I developed and by which I compare newer experiences so of course it will all seem so much better. Most of us have at least a little bias towards the past.

I'm not nostalgic. It just happens that most recent games pretty much suck. I hold appreciation for a few recent games, but still.

There are more good strategy games now than there were fifteen years ago.

wtf are u talking about all im seeing is a generic bald space marine?!?!?!  Shocked

she's clearly balding there

but phubans pic has a bit of a point, only it's really just applicable to multiplayer FPS games since even though you can have good character design, it's fast-paced enough and way too based on reality, that looking at it all around you would probably be a huge distraction or would lessen how immersed you feel. Still though, apparently halo had good character design, which means that a lot of (or just the really popular) FPS creators are failing to create characters that are not only realistic, but still have a otherwordly and cool taste in fashion

i think the standard for character design in multiplayer fps games is different. maybe i have a different perspective on this because i come from the age of quake 3 where everyone played with textures disabled but to me it's mainly about readability. creativity comes second. also for some fps's (counterstrike for instance) it's important for all player models to have the same hitbox for balance reasons. even something like tf2 ultimately emphasizes substance over style, the point being that the classes are easy to differentiate based on their silhouettes.
