If you look at a typical mountainscape, things get lighter and less distinct from the sky the farther away they are.

atmospheric perspective my good fellows.
love the mountains, but i feel like there is to much negative space. i think adding something in the far background would really help, whether it be giant mountains, or clouds, or something. one thing I was thinking of that might be fun, if you watch "Cars" a lot of the enviroment is car parts, Giant mountains look like car fronts, tire treads in the sky. I think putting these into the background might help with the Cafe theme and bring it all together, giving you a world built around coffee, and the cafe scene. the problem is im not sure, aside from cups, what you could have. possible coffe pitchers as volcanoes, giant suger bowls. the coffee parts of a cappacino machine. giant mountains built of coffee beans. just thought i might add that in.

There is meant to be nothing here, shortly down, however, I will add a thick layer of clouds, and further down a mountain range. It's sort of like.... as you get further down in the elevator, you are introduced to the world.
YOU SEE, the mountain breaks the cloud layer, when you're up that high, there is nothing except the blue sky. There is little oxygen too, but let's forget about that.

I really like the artwork of this game/concept so far! I haven't looked through the whole topic (and with the amount of pages, I might never >.>; ) but I'm interested in this project. I was wondering, was there a post that had game play concepts in it? Have you thought of them yet? How will the game play? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
Also, as for a story, basically you're a guy who loves coffee and goes on some epic quest or something?
Anyhow, I like the look of the stages/areas/whatever so far. Very ambient looking. I like =D

If so, you should probably put them on the first post.

It's basically turning out to be a sort of... sidescrolling platformer shooter adventure explorational mildly rpg-ish game. As to actual gameplay, I've hinted towards some of the ideas we've had so far, but haven't really said anything outright, nor do I plan to. Yet. Flink and I where talking about story the other day in fact, another thing which I don't really want to talk about yet, so yeah. If you want to see all the images that I've posted so far, check out these directories: fleh.sereneworx.com/files/cafe/ fleh.sereneworx.com/cafe/

Cave story was definitely the first sidescrolling platform-shooter rpg.

No, it was the first software ever. Pixel was the first programmer in the history and he wrote the game with punch-cards for the analytical engine.

Actually, cave story was originally made by cavemen, hence the name. It was the first game of any type ever made.
