That looks really cool. I hope they change the name before it's released though.

Edit: This video doesn't explain anything about the game itself. This is why I hate Kickstarter. The one thing they said about the game is that maybe there will be a dragon egg that can hatch.

Read the post. It has a few details about gameplay. (No resources; you cast 2/5 cards in your hand per turn, then discard your hand. When you run out of stuff in your deck, you shuffle it back in.)

They'll probably post more about the gameplay over time.

This is an explanation of the gameplay.

Oh, neat. I hope that he is intelligent about the monetization because he's played LoL. It shouldn't cost a small fortune to play like Magic does. I still hate Kickstarter, though, because they felt obligated to use that shallow high-production-value video instead of a down-to-earth video about what the game will actually be like.

250 grand to make that? And the guy who created Magic the Gathering in the mix?

No. They have more than enough money to do it already. And then you'll end up paying later with booster packs and shite.

Just play this! It's been around longer, it's free, and it's Japanese! And it's been out for a long time!

They actually explained this.

"While Ascension has been a great success thanks to our incredible fans, we’re still a small company working on a small company’s budget.  We’re not a big studio that can fund a project like this on our own. SolForge is the biggest, most exciting project we’ve worked on to date, and we need your help to make it a reality."

I'm willing to bet it'll come out no matter what; but that Kickstarter will help it come out faster and better.

That is a ridiculous explanation. I don't buy it one bit. If Garfield is on board, there's bound to have support for release.

Sorry, I can't for the life of me believe that explanation.

I think it really comes down to them wanting to put the risk on consumers instead of themselves.

That's the point of Kickstarter, I believe.

I hate that Kickstarter is becoming that. In my opinion, Kickstarter (and similar funding models) should only be for projects which wouldn't reap any financial return anyway, like art projects. People would be funding something which wouldn't otherwise exist.

I'm okay with using kickstarter to help find early project cash flows, especially for groups which are well-organized but just can't hack a particular pet project, like Double Fine.

I am curious, though, what kind of metrics there are for projects that have succeeded and failed to pay out. Of the Kickstarters I've funded, the results actually haven't been that good. It's kind of disappointing to go back and realize that when I look at some of the things I funded on a whim. I imagine a lot of the projects on Kickstarter must go belly-up.

seconded.

It is becoming a way to get a zero-risk loan without going through the hassle of actually paying a bank to lend you money, and it's incredible how many people fall to the "we don't have money" excuse.
I refuse to believe that nobody really offered to fund 250k to a project joined by the Magic guy... they just preferred to give no revenue share to any publisher, which from a business standpoint makes lots of sense anyway.

I guess sometimes things will start to fall apart.

Man obtains rights to Cheetahmen, starts kickstarter to release a version of the game that can be completed.

I'm not really not sure if I should be happy or sad this is happening.
