I really like MOBA games like DoTA and League of Legends but I gotta tell ya, the artistic style of these games totally sucks !  Ironically, the most popular game, LoL, I find the most repulsive - the strange semi cel-shaded mixed with the hero design is just terrible!  All the heroes are goofy/cute/weird and there is no thematic unity among them.

I mean, MOBA games are so brutal and intense, why aren't more of these games gritty and violent?  These heroes are dying over and over again in some weird mythical arena. . .
I suppose the art style initially came from DoTA & therefore Warcraft III - but the art of that game is what initially led me away from it (and kept me playing Starcraft).  Which is exactly the MOBA that I've been playing - a Starcraft 2 user made map called Storm of the Imperial Sanctum.  It's a classic DoTA-style game but it uses Starcraft characters and for me that is awesome  Smiley  But currently only 1 person is developing it and I'd really like to find a stand-alone game.

I find Heroes of Newerth a little better than LoL because it is slightly more naturalistic but its light-hearted fantasy "world", again, just doesn't seem to fit the gameplay.

Bloodline Champions has a unique, kind-of-tribal design and unique gameplay but I have yet to try it out.

Rise of Immortals seems to have the best art-style so far.  It still uses a mythical/fantasy theme but has a more traditional fantasy RPG/Tolkien/D&D look and the heroes actually look cool!  This is one I might be able to pick up.

So let's discuss MOBA game style - perhaps there is a game out there I'm missing that you all may know of that has a sense of design and is just what I'm looking for.  Also, is there something about MOBA games that causes them to gravitate toward a fantasy world or is it just the lineage from DoTA?  What about scifi, post-apocalypse, WW2?  Well, hello there!

And a 2D MOBA would be freaking cool . . . just throwing that out there indie devs.

Really, Rise of Immortals has the best art style?

Really?

Do you still stand by that?

I mean, it looks like something from deviantART. Something bad.

I personally like Dota 2's art style.  It has a simplicity and cleanness to it.

I'll give you LoL having a wildly inconsistent art style, but I still prefer it to RoI.

Hah that looks like a lot of fun!  I meant 2D but still with top-down view and RTS control, though.  But sweet twist on the the genre!

This made me laugh super hard seeing this, it's like so off putting for some reason.
anyways I LOVE doombringers skin on dota 2, it looks like a clay figure or something, it's amazing!

Ya dude Scorpix seems tight!  RoI probably doesn't have as much thematic unity as I thought but at least I know what I'm looking at.

That portrait is hilarious

But look at him in action!  Robot scorpion androids are freaking cool

LoL characters are all cloaks and swords

And yeah DoTA 2 of course looks great, when is open beta ??   Beg

I actually am so impressed by how well dota 2 capture the images of dota 1 but then turns them into their own thing at the same time, it's incredible and hard to notice unless you look back.

This is really just a taste thing. I like both Dota 2 and League artistically speaking, but I prefer the gameplay of Dota 2 so I guess I'm biased towards that.

I think some of the League champs look fantastic, especially the newer ones. Some of them also have great voice acting (Nasus for example), but they don't have as many lines as in Dota 2. As an example, Nasus in League has 16 different lines, while the Witch Doctor in Dota 2 has at least a hundred of them!

ya league has some shitty character designs but for the most part they're easily recognizable while playing

and thats what counts

also some of the more recent character models actually look pretty great, its just some of the older ones that look like they came from 2001

thought this thread was about artstyle at first

I've only ever played WC3 dota (looked awesome for what it was)
Half a game of HoN which sucked male sex organ
Dota 2, which is amazing looking and a super fun game and probably the best moba or w/e type game out there

what does moba even stand for anyway

It's a terrible acronym - Multiplayer Online Battle Arena

which taken at face value fits almost every multiplayer online game
