Without having done any research on this at all I'm going to say that most of those are probably because of inaccurate emulation. No, I actually remember many arcade games being like that. My friends and I used to joke about it.

I wanted to start an argument here about the importance of attract modes, but I realized that I really only wanted to use it to post GIFs of cool attract modes. So I figured I'd just cut out the middleman and post the pics.

by creating an attract mode (or equivalent) you're basically adding design to your game. How can this be bad?

You start running into problems when your attract sequence is cooler than your game but how can you top it when it's so awesome. SHUT UP ALREADY... RUFF RUFF... dang

My friends and I used to joke about it. Though some of these look glitchy as hell, I’ve certainly seen many arcade games where the player dies to obvious stuff in the gameplay preview. I always thought it was intentional to lull people into giving the machine a shot out of “well I wouldn’t lose to that” bravado. As if the game was being played really well it would intimidate.

Getting cut scenes as a reward is kind of nice. I remember loving the cut scenes in diablo 2. But on the other hand, it's also a cheap trick to make you play. So I guess if it's done in small portions and "good taste" then it adds to the game. If you mostly play the game to see the next cut scene, which is about every 5 minutes or so, then the game turns into a hybrid between a movie and a game and becomes inferior to both medioms. Though, playing game with "cheap addicting tricks" is also enjoyable. Sometimes I just love stashing treasures and equipment in a game. Oh yea, and I remember watching the intro was kind of a big deal in the past. You would expect an intro from a game, these days I am not so excited about CG or "GPU" intros in a game. Because some of the games just use that as cheap dirty tricks to attract players, and some times it's too obvious that it looks silly. For example ME3. Hope I didn't diverge too much from the subject.
