I usually don't post much in the social/general sub-boards, but this time I'd really like to speak a word about a KS project that just started.

No disclaimer: I'm not involved in this project, I don't know the team and have never met them. So I hope you won't call me a dirty viraller... yet. Smiley

Cross of the Dutchman is going to be what looks like a third-person slasher, and currently has mainly some amazing art and a very interesting setting - Dutch/Frisian folklore, which will also reflect in the in-game languages.

While as of this hour, details on the game are still sparse, the team seems great and communicative and the assets already look smashing. From what it seems, they're about to do mo-cap sessions right now.

I'm particularly happy that these guys are trying to release something pertinent to their own home country. Usually in gaming, you have Brits writing about Rome, Japanese devs writing about Europe... - but this particular project seems to be done out of love and respect for their own heritage, and I like how there's just a touch of history/culture lesson tucked away somewhere in the setting.

Again, details seem to be thin-ish at the moment, so personally I didn't pledge that high. Still, I'm keeping my wallet ready for when actual combat/exploration is shown, and... You know, I just wanted to spread the word. Smiley
Thanks for reading, and have a look if you like.

I like the idea, but not what looks to play like a sluggish MMO action-rpg.

I am bewildered as to how you so confidently came to that conclusion after watching only a few seconds of a GIF of a game still very heavily in production.

Personally, I think it looks great and I wish the best for those guys.

I know, and hopefully I pointed it out in my topic too.
Yeah, it's a pretty individual thing. I've already written them to get going and show gameplay actually, fancy that.

But like all KS beyond Schaefer & company, this is purely faith-based, nothing more. For me, the little they currently have to show hits the right spots, but obviously for most people it won't yet.

Not sure, but from the gifs I can see that:
- windmills: check
- terrain elevation: zero

...so my personal quota of Dutchness requirements is pretty much filled up.

Hey Guys, I'm one of the developers of Cross of the Dutchman. Nice to see some people already talking about our game here Smiley

Unfortunately you can't Wink We actually did some thorough research into how people lived at the time, what building techniques they used, etc. And we're using this information to build our levels.

I like the idea, but not what looks to play like a sluggish MMO action-rpg.

I'll paste the gameplay description from our Kickstarter story, hopefully this will take away any doubts regarding gameplay.

Quote
The game will have a 3rd person birds-eye perspective, similar to what you're seeing in the Animated GIF. You as the player will control "Grutte Pier" who will gather an army of soldiers (farmers) to aid him in his quest. The main goal is to liberate the towns and villages from the enemy oppressors who appear in about four different factions (even though the saxxons were the reason Pier went to battle, there were many small armies trying to get as much as they could back then). Each faction has a different level of hostility against Pier and his men, and different levels of hostility against each other. The result is an interesting game world where you have to watch where you're going, or who you're challenging.

Pier will start out as a humble farmer, but soon people will recognize his cause and start joining his group of warriors. We've created this group to be a flexible company, so soldiers will leave and join the group depending on which village travel through. They might stick around in the inns or brothels or they might get up from their chair and follow you to the next battle. As Piers' actions become known to the people, more soldiers will join the group, ultimately forming a formidable army.

Controls are kept clean and simple. Similar to games like Zelda, action is based on timing and reading the opponent's movements. However, there are several forms of attacks, and Pier is able to use the (destructable) environment as a weapon as well, throwing debris and objects at groups of enemies to knock them over. As the legend tells us, Pier was so strong he could lift a horse, Pier would not have a problem picking up something that would crush an opponent with ease. Your men won't get in your way, and are actually eager to start fighting themselves. The result is t hat once you encounter a group of enemies, the scene turns into a battlefield in no-time. Pier is still able to move around the battle field, "helping out" his men with his huge 6-foot sword. By using simple commands, Pier is able to focus his army on certain enemies to weaken or create diversions.

We plan to have pretty big battle scenes, and we've tested battles of over 200 soldiers at once without any problems. Battles in villages will likely be a lot smaller than this, but because the bodies of the victims remain out in the open until they are removed by the villagers, you will be able to "enjoy" your victory for quite some time after the battle is finished.

Sorry, quite a long story, I know. Cheers.

You know, you should really have some gameplay up by now...

It's a bit sad, because good art and a motivation can only take you so far. Still, I'm a bit baffled, because at least art-wise it's leagues above 95 % of other Kickstarter projects...

Trust me, we're working hard on getting a gameplay trailer out next week. Hopefully in time to convince enough people to get our project funded.

For a sneak peak Blink you could check out our Cross of the Dutchman game jam video of last friday Wink

You know I actually did, but that just puts me into the group of people who follow this project, and who probably all have given some backing already.

I'd really suggest not keeping things like these so super-secret. Or the voice casting - that would make for some neat insight too, yet it's hidden away in the Youtube channel.

The Game Jam video isn't really a good replacement for a trailer - most people will probably get bored halfway through for lack of actual game.

I'm not ripping on you (kinda obvious considering I created this thread in the first place), but I'm really thinking you need to show more material, well-edited and ASAP...

Good luck!

First of, thanks for backing us Miguelito and for creating a topic! As said before a gameplay trailer is coming, we just ask for a little more patience. We didn't want to put too many attention on the game jam video as it's not the final gameplay and also not the right way to present it to potential backers.

I like the idea of highlighting the voice casting. It started as a contest and we haven't made a final decision yet, but definitely something that might interest our (potential) backers. I'll consider it for one of our updates.

Guys, we've released a gameplay trailer of Cross of the Dutchman! Captured from the alpha build, so doesn't include the mocap data yet.
