I've always liked the way in some older RPG's the player characters avoid protrusions which would otherwise stop the character completely. I implemented a similar feature yesterday. You can see it in action in this vine:

If the character is trying to move forward and is partially blocked, there's a sideways nudge which kicks in and aligns the character with the open cell they're trying to move toward.

The two dots ahead of the player indicate when the sideways nudge is engaged.
