American facts paul, american ... dominant but universal? Wink
In god they thrust, it's written right on the money and the justice court ...

that's true, but, the audience for our games is *also* mostly american (if you're making an english-language game, more than half of your players will be american)

On the other hand there are more people with English as a second language than native speakers.

Pretentiousness is simply the property of pretending to have an artistic depth that isn't there. It is about adopting the trappings of art without containing that same depth.

For example, philosophical debate is often difficult to understand, so I will make myself obtuse for no reason and refuse to qualify anything I say so I sound as though I'm clever and philosophical.

Artistic film often uses experimentative filming techniques to convey their themes, so I will make a film that's in black and white, filmed upside down and has english subtitles for the english spoken dialogue.

What they say vs. what they're trying to say? That's actually a work of brilliance waiting to happen.

ok time for a serious post

"pretentious" art is shallow art that tries to fake depth by adopting superficial signifiers of actually "deep" art, i.e. kitsch that pretends to be high art. example: making an orchestral arrangement of a pop song does not make that song classical music. of course to be pretentious, the song would have to actually be presented as "classical music."

all of this is elitist bullshit tho and unless you care a lot about what "high art" is or isn't you shouldn't let it influence your taste.

That is a great summation.

A game isn't high art unless it's bundled with an Artist's Statement explaining why the game is art

The only thing I can contribute to this thread is that I keep misreading the title as
