I've finishing my final project in an art foundation course, and I could really do with some help from some of you strapping lads.

This is a test of style and a little bit of concept art I'm working on.
I'm attempting to relay a little bit of an expressionist style with this, and I like parts of it.
I just feel theres something its missing, colour wise, or mark wise. It doesn't really pop and theres nothing really special about it.
I was just wondering if any of you could give me some tips or pointers?
I could really do with them! Cheers  Beer!

It's not too bad honestly. The big things that I think are issues would be, we tend to look at the head for some connection to the character, and because there's just a scribble its hard to read what's going on there. The repetition of the arm-creatures 3 tentacles on its head and the guys chest is a little much visually.

Also, the expressionists were more deliberate then sketchy/scribbly, each stroke caught the mood and motion of the image. So taking a bit more time on this design, especially the torso (sweater ?) The whole could design use some saturated colors, but that also depends on the character or environment. I may do a paint-over later, show some of my ideas for what you're trying to do.

Hm, I definitely get what you mean on the repetition of 3! Need to think of a way to work that out.

You have some really good points, I guess I need to keep messing around with this until it starts looking right! Especially with taking more time on the brush strokes. I think I'm rushing into this too much because I'm panicking!

If you do get around to doing a paint-over that'd be fantastic, its always fascinating to see someone elses take on your art. Always good for a breath of fresh air.

Very, very quick paint over. Keeping my word mostly, ignoring your brush work, sorry. Giving it a bit more clarity and color variety, still not one hundred percent on what its supposed to be. Connecting the gold elements and colors a bit... it's still sort of confused.

Ahh, thanks so much man.
I'm definitely getting what you were saying a lot more than before.

I'm starting to understand why my drawing was so confused.
It'd all spawned from a very quick and freeflow sketch and I was trying to paint over stuff that wasn't really there... if you get me?
Haha, well I think I have a better idea of what I'm planning now, so i'll keep this thread updated!

Thanks man, its really appreciated.

I feel bad for double posting, but I figure its okay as long as its a useful post?

Anyway, i've done a rethink of the character design and I just feel I should ask for the go ahead before I go over it?
Just to see if theres anything I can improve before I go too far!

Thanks again for any help! Smiley

Can you post some more of your work? The picture and style are awesome but it's hard to know what you're going for without any context. What I see is a promising sketch but it could go in a bunch of different directions.

Edit: Are you going for something like this perhaps?

or maybe this?

I don't really have any digital work that isn't a year+ old.
I've been doing an art foundation for the past year in order to get ready for my uni course, and I have to admit I've been neglecting my painting skills, both digitally and traditionally.

I'm not really sure how I want this to turn out, thats kind've what I've been trying to figure out with this exercise. I really want to get something that looks experimental, something that seems like I haven't been too anally retentive about the details.
The game is all about the character psyche. He's deeply paranoid and distrusting, and he's in a strange place he doesn't understand. I want to get that feeling across in the atmosphere of the piece.

So far I've been fairly drastically. I think I'm over stretching myself in trying to reach something that requires a lot of practise to get to, but I think this is the kind of exercise I need!
Whats life without a challenge, ey?  Wink

There is one other picture of this character I did which might give a bit on an insight.

Out of the two images you gave me, i'd say the first calls to me more.

Thanks for responding, it really is so appreciated!

I've reached something I like.
Its not really what I was aiming for, but I think I was pushing myself too much for the amount of time I had.

I know its not what I had been aiming for previously, but I feel the colour and the general style is much nicer.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas I could try to make it feel a little more abstracty and freeflowy?
