I've been a fan of Guilty Gear for ages, even though I'm still not amazing at it.

The only fighting game I'm good at is SSB for the 64, so I'm about as swine as it comes
Honestly it's just such a turn off having to... Memorize shit. It's like you're always taking an exam, and even if you do well, it's still stressful and complicated.

guess the fuck what nerdlord
every game that isnt targeted to KIDS also has memorizing
if you didn't know what axe does in dota2 you'd be all "Im gonna stand as close to this guy as i can to hit him in the nose!!!"
the only thing thats a bit ugly is character specific combos, and even then
this is a fight, castle
the big advantage is that instead of lasting 50 mins like a strategy game it lasts about 2 and then you can just FIGHT AGAIN
memorizing shit hhhhhhah
thats how you get good at EVERYTHING
weren't you the guy that liked bullet hells, too

if you want to be good at SSB you can memorize combos and destroy everyone
memorizing is the key to literally every fighting game

Never played a bullet hell before, actually
Memorizing is cool and all, like I know how dota works as you mentioned, but when I pause a game like soul caliber and look at all the combos my eyes just glaze over

okay, or tekken or marvel versus capcom 2 any game wherein you have to memorize a list of several dozen hard-to-pull-off combos, those are the ones that don't have very much appeal to me

anyways good luck not memorizing matchups and specific situations tho.
at any rate, play KoF 98 solely and exclusively as Ralph and you'll be fine.

I can play any 64 character flawlessly, it's what two years of having that be the only game my college friends and I having access to will do to a person
I'm not saying a game shouldn't involve learning, that's stupid. I'm just saying that a game that involves memorizing dozens upon dozens of nearly-identical-to-execute moves isn't appealing to me. That's just my opinion, sorry.
I've heard skullgirls does a good job of teaching philistine noobs like myself how to actually play a fighting game without being immediately overwhelmed and put off, but it's not available on the PC yet or something? or you need a gadget-y-goo? There's just too many other competitive options available to necessitate delving into a niche genre.

skullgirls will be availabe on PC sometime soon, rumoured to be on Steam. you can do plenty on skullgirls without knowing much about combos especially if you play solo cerebella but eventually you're gonna need to know at least some loops to stand a chance with anyone who got the game more than a week ago

Castle I used to say the exact same things before I actually got into fighting games.
Complexity depends on the particular game (UMVC3 vs Tekken) and even on characters -in- said game (KOF13 EX Kyo vs Andy). You just gotta experiment and find what works for you.
I don't know about you but Marvel vs Capcom 3 opened the door for me. It's super easy (and satisfying!) to pull off flashy combos. Guilty Gear is also pretty loose with comboing.
