KomradeJack wins!

No other entries Sad

I'll post my thoughts in a bit.

Please post if you think you may be entering - thanks!

Memories are often clouded, modified incorrectly due to person interpretation...perhaps only the negative is remembered, or only the positive, etc - be it someone's first time falling completely for another, a vacation to a distant land, a murder. They will be the subject of this Musical Challenge.

Your task is to..

Write a song that is of the form A-B, where A is  "The event happening in the past", and B is "The remembering of that event by someone in the future". The event need not be a personal one such as a marriage/death/etc., it could be some fake historical event where A is a person experiencing it and B is a person from the future interpreting it. Or, A could be a boy's first time burning his tongue on a beef taco hot pocket, and B is him as an adult remembering that moment while going to fetch a Meatball Marinara Hot Pocket from the microwave for his son. You get the idea!

(or, two songs, one being "A" , the other "B")

The catch is that I will not be judging at all on explanation, the musical themes should be, well, musically connected in a somewhat obvious way! i.e., no verbal explanation needed or wanted, although feel free to post one though I'll as much as I can not allow it to influence my decision. SO, GET TO IT!

As perhaps an example, checkout the songs "Memory" and "Majesty" from the Fez OST.

The contest ends 11:59 PM EST, 6/22/12.

----------

A bonus, "fun", prompt. For those who'd rather do something a little easier. If you win it, I'll uh, put any 16x16 sprite you want (within reason) in my new game, next to a bear named George. Somewhere. I think that's an okay unrelated prize.

THE ACTUAL CHALLENGE. MUSICALLY NARRATE THIS STORY THAT I WILL NOW TYPE UP RANDOMLY

George the bear was hungry one day, so he went to his local supermarket. He noticed that "Honey Oat Bunches" were on sale for 3.99/box. This excited him, so he tackled the little cereal rack and knocked down an entire aisle of the supermarket. His daughter was on the other side and was permanently crippled, so George the bear went on a rampage and destroyed the entire store, except for the melons. George was put down by the NYPD, and 10 years later there was a History Channel special on him.

I may change the prompt to something easier if no one is working on this at the moment, I'll wait a bit. Or make it entirely about the bear story.

Or make it entirely about the bear story.
I actually thought of skipping the challenge and just do the bear thing for kicks.

Doing the "Memories" idea justice would require quite a lot of work.
I'd rather produce some silly story-telling music on the side.

So you've got my vote on that! :D

I am halfway through the initial challenge.   But I agree that the initial idea is a bit much for a simple challenge.

You should have given feedback on the thread then, like "Neat. I'm gonna start right now." Tongue  Wink

I don't think that should be a requirement.

I'm just messing with you. Smiley

I think it would only be fair if people who already started can still enter with the "Memories" challenge in mind.

Although the bear prompt would be a lot easier, I think, given who has started working (and made it be known), it is only fair to leave it at the original prompt. (Sorry to anyone who may have started on the bear prompt in the past 4 hours) I can't think of a way to judge two incredibly different prompts against eachother fairly and have one winner. The "musical story" prompt now has some random prize I thought of (as opposed to nothing at all, so I guess it's better). The winner of the original challenge of course will get to make the next one.

And as a note to anyone else thinking of joining in, it doesn't need to be a very long piece, I know the prompt is a bit difficult (my fault there). You could perhaps get the idea across with 30 second clips.

So, if you're interested in doing either please give a post in the thread.

Thanks for the entry!

I think the mood for the whole piece - sort of somber, but with energy, gets set with the first few minutes of slight variations on a theme that carries on for the whole song. The first half struck me as some sort of sad realization by a person , experiencing an event in some sort of disbelief. For me, the "future" part was very close in time to the first part, due to the similar feel because of the very close carrying over of the theme, where the main difference was the cutting up and reversing of various parts of the piano. Almost like someone in a sort of stressed/panicked state remembering that event a few hours ago that had filled them with disbelief!

Nicely done. I like the transitions a lot around 4:09. One small criticism would be that I would have enjoyed more extreme variation of dynamics in phrases in the piano (say, those rising passages around 3:20 or so).
