Share the name in spoilers. I want to see the design.
Also the similarities I noticed were the concept of "astral planes", people ascending to a demon like beings (apostles) and Great Ones sound similar to God Hand. Also the struggle to not succumb into beast reminds me a lot of the Guts and his berserk armor. Of course some of those elements are quite common in this kind of fiction.

the boss is in a chalice dungeon. he is Watchdog of the Old Lords and looks almost exactly like Fenrir from Berserk. http://i.imgur.com/pxv1tKK.jpg

Do we really live in a world where 'horror game copied lovecraft' is creative or surprising

anyway i knew this game was gonna have some lovecraft in it as soon as i saw the town was called "yharnam". i think it was even originally spelled "yarnham" which makes it even closer to arkham. i also read an interview with miyazaki before the game came out so that "spoiled" it for me haha.

for the record, it was the bait and switch aspect i was referring to, not just the inspiration.
small aside, am i alone in thinking bloodborne has some of souls' better bosses? i've seen some people pretty meh on them, but i think they're pretty much all great in their own way.

yeah i like the bosses. the game has a good balance between more "hardcore" bosses and narrative/setpiece bosses, just like in demon's souls (im probably one of the 5 people in the universe who prefers DeS's approach to bosses to DkS1's). also some new concepts and no lame endless recycling of stuff like gargoyles, o&s, flamelurkers, artorias etc. in dks2 it was like: hey, people really liked the gargoyles and ornstein & smough so lets put 15 duo and trio bosses into this game.
i appreciate bloodbornes approach in general: it seems like a really "well rounded" game in every respect.

considering every game that has lovecraftian elements just jacks itself off with tentacles and deep water? yes. when this is like the only game to do lovecraftian horror correctly, yeah thats p surprising.

The variety of the bosses is probably the best in the series imo, and this goes without sacrificing their staying power like some of DeS's more gimmicky bosses. I haven't played all of the bosses yet, but for the most part every single one has something unique going on. Initially I was preparing myself to fight a lot of bosses with beast in their title, but they went far beyond just that, and they even managed to make all the beast type bosses pretty special. Regarding the lack of recycled souls stuff, I think they even managed to strike a good balance between feeling "souls-y" but fresh with the NPCs and areas. There is no direct blighttown or solaire equivalent (at least as far as I can tell). Patches is in the game, but he's utilized in the most interesting way possible. Across the board, From really wanted to do something new in a similar style, and I think they nailed it.

its really nice how the early game lulls you into a false sense of security haha. after the first 3 bosses i was like "ok im gonna kill a bunch of werewolves in this game, got it". then things get weirder and weirder.

A lot of the beast bosses are the same, just varying in size.
Also, Scholar of the First Sin is pretty cool.

eh they were different enough for me
cainhurst castle is sadistic as fuck btw. I think I'm grossly under-leveled, but in any case From is keeping the tradition of having their coolest environments house the biggest fuckers in the game (hint, if you're playing a From game and you see bookshelves or snow, run because you're fucked). since I'm playing this part after having beaten the game, I'm kinda baffled by how different it is. like there's a million new things in there. it's cool to be finding it all for the first time, but I almost feel like there's too much stuff crammed in there.

after playing bloodborne, dark souls 2 feels like its happening in slow motion. its noticeably less responsive. especially the rolls.

i felt that exact way after playing ds1 again for an extended period of time. everything in 2 just feels slightly delayed. the responsiveness + new way of dashing around enemies in bloodborne is something i will dread losing when i return to older souls games (im sure even ds1 feels weird now). it just feels so much better.
