I just hope they don't go all UP or WALL-E on us and have a really interesting and mature beginning with the second half of the movie aimed at kids cos that'd be a shame.

I really want this to be a good movie.
and yeah, I really hope that they don't fall into that trap again, but the trailer says otherwise. I mean, the trailer itself does that -- the beginning is really cool, and then the fucking Flo Rider song starts and it goes full pop-culture kid movie mode.

Were you expecting a Disney movie to not go full pop-culture kid movie mode?

Disney is actually a little bit better about that than, say, Dreamworks.

True. At least Disney makes their own music instead of a separate budget for music licensing.

Their goal is to get all the 18-35 (in addition to their usual target audience) wet and excited under the pretense of false retro nostalgia circlejerk, and judging by some posts in this thread, they seem to be doing pretty well so far.

Aw, I hope they put in the voices so it looks like the one from the movie. I got up to level 15 and died. It looks like your stock of lives can't go above 3.

I'm only commenting on their marketing techniques, not on the movie itself. I fully acknowledge that Scoot Plagrim was the same, but despite that I thought the graphic novel was pretty cool.

Then again, trailers are meant to appeal to the masses.

Personally, don't even care if the story is good. I think the references are awesome, and even if they do nothing at all, it's great to look at, like watching some kind of epic poster. I will pay to see a bunch of nicely animated characters just talking to each other.

Unfortunately comes out here on 29 Nov.

It was alright, I felt it used it's references more as a crutch to lean on which rubbed me the wrong way. I hated the licensed songs and why did they put Skrillex in as a DJ? Seriously? The animation was good, some nice touches for the "retro" characters having choppy animations. Some of the environments seemed like just copy paste things and kinda rushed but maybe that was the intended look? It had some good concepts and ideas but I think the whole movie was executed somewhat poorly. It seemed like they were trying to attract older people with the retro references and younger audiences with the immature jokes but I don't think they really succeeded in creating a good experience for both groups. Still better than a lot of the animated trash that comes out. Like that trailer for the Jack Frost/Sandman/Russian Santa/Tooth Fairy shit. Seriously what the fuck was that?

I'll agree that it was clumsily done in some areas, but it more than makes up for that with how well it shines in other places. To me, the references to real video games were just eye candy and extra world-building; they didn't need to be there for the plot, but they added a really nice touch to it. I think what I like most is how invested it is in its setting... There aren't any moments in the movie where it seems to forget that it's set in the world of arcade games (except maybe the Skrillex cameo as you mentioned, which was just bizarre). The entire plotline is very specific to the game world and uses it to its fullest as a storytelling device.

I'll agree to the fact that it had some very clever and interesting ideas surrounding the world it was in. The power bar and the first-person player were the coolest ones I think (oh and the dynamite gal thing was hilarious). One other thing that isn't really the movies fault but the voice of Fix-It Felix (Jack McBrayer) was so disconnecting for me because he has such a distinct voice that whenever he spoke I could only picture Jack McBrayer doing the voice and not the animated character (if that makes sense) really took something out of the experience for me but it was probably because I watch 30 Rock...

This movie was solid gold. I was surprised at how tastefully and interestingly they handled the whole "video game world" -- it felt very natural, and very fun. Definitely one of my favorite Disney movies yet.  Smiley
