metroid prime is an "fps" in the same way that gta is a racing game, except metroid prime 3 which is shit. great example of a developer missing the point of their own game.
I don't know about all that, but if you took out the Morph Ball and scanning objects for info Metroid Prime isn't a far stretch from the original Doom games or the N64 Turok games. GTA actually features very little racing (generally a slight few missions per game) while Metroid Prime is pretty much a FPS with Metroid trappings.

the first 2 prime games are literally metroid in 1st person (with a whiff of system shock thrown in i guess). the camera perspective doesn't change anything about the core gameplay. no one calls super metroid a run & gun either even though it has all the mechanics.
anyway we're kinda derailing the thread too much here lol

On another note, while we've got this thread hijacked and all, of all the developers they could of given a shot at Metroid they went with Team Ninja...
I'd rather they had went with Vanillaware, I'd love to see a 2D Metroid done with the graphical finesse of Odin Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Dragon's Crown, etc.
Or even Way Forward, they pulled off some excellent looking settings in Aliens: Infestation that wouldn't be a far stretch from what you'd expect to see in a Metroid game and they've definitely got the animating chops for it (as seen with games like Shantae: Risky's Revenge and Mighty Switch Force).

(btw playing skybored sword actually made me wish i was play dork souls instead so not much of a stretch)

Or Sega! I'd love to see them grind a franchise like Zelda into the dirt just like they did with Sonic!

step 1: turn dark link from a miniboss into an actual character and give him his own game. also give him a gun, a motorcycle and a "dark, brooding" (read whiny, obnoxious) personality.

Metroid Prime is really Metroid just thought I'd jump in and say that.
For the sake of on-topic: in Metroid Prime there are these bug type enemies that travel in swarms in the second area. You can like 'clear out' the tunnel they're in by stopping and aiming before proceeding or you can just walk right through since they explode on contact; this takes like 30 hp. When you first go to this area you have 99 total hp, so thats a significant portion of your life energy. Later when you've stacked up a number of energy tanks on top of that it's a minuscule amount, so it's actually more efficient to just walk on through.
You feel powerful yo. You feel like you are slowly beginning to unwind the nature of the environment and to control it. It's boss. Metroid Prime is a boss game.

..Bushido Blade! The idea of 1-hit samurai duels is great, but the game had 'hidden' health bars anyway. I would definitely like to see improved sequel.

Bushido Blade updated to something to likes of Dead or Alive/Virtua Fighter would be great. Online would be deadly.

That's what I thought too, but I've replayed the game recently and on many 1 on 1 battles your first 4-5 attacks did nothing except some slight knockback. You can see it here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqcTShcchKg even in the first battle.

I like the idea as health being a minor element in a game, instead of being the main focus like a lot of games push. I particularly like the health system Fez has. There is no health bar or anything, because its a game that has it as a secondary feature. It focuses more on the gameplay. I know there is a fine balance between challenge and reward, and for this to work you need a health system one way or another. I can't see any other ways for a game to work.(unless the game is explicitly adventure based then you don't always need one.)

A Cracked article I read recently had a novel suggestion that instead of taking hits that an unrealistic health kit would heal, protagonists should dodge the bullet.
It would be pretty funny to see a game take the health bar concept and turn it into a series of Matrix style dodges before finally getting killed.
