couldnt they have found, like, an unsuccessful developer to talk to as well, or maybe someone who makes games that aren't platformers with gimmicks? show a little bit of the actuality of the thing? i don't even like platformers, but there's some people out there who have been working long and hard and don't get to be covered because they're not exactly like these people

like, jeff vogel's been making indie games with his wife for twenty years; he put his kids through college with it. that's a cool story, but it isn't arty enough or tragic enough or like the holocaust enough to be in the movie i suppose

Also, it all depends on the delivery and how it's presented.

If you film me while I find a critical error after I already uploaded the game to the servers, and I go: "Oh man! I'm so fucked!". It's going to be a funny tidbit of developer's life.

But if you slowly zoom on my face while I say it, play sad music, and then mix it with a shot of me looking at the distance, it will make me sound like a whiny idiot. Like, what is my problem?! This movie is shot just like that, making people starring in it sound much more whiny and pretentious than I suspect they really are.

Another thing is that it does perpetuate the stereotype (and yes, it does exist) that indies are these weird guys who talk big words about their retro platformer.

If this stereotype exists, it's limited to the game scene, not in the population in general, they don't really care too much. What they do care about is a good story, IGTM, being a movie, tells 3 interesting stories about people overcoming adversity.

Most of the people in this thread are too close to be objective about these things. That's why I said it was getting mad Walter Day and Robert Mruczek in here. They were too close to the story of the movie and were(are?) obsessed with their version of the story, and trying to tell it. Nobody cares.

In this thread, I see a lot of the same. This isn't your indie game story, this might not be the indie game story you like. Objectively these three are interesting stories, and people who don't really give a shit about indie games? Well, it resonates with them.

Please, make the movie about making indie games, where everything works out. Make the SHIT out of it. I'll watch it.

Isn't he the guy that posted some retarded shit after winning IGF with an incomplete game, twice? Isn't he a quite obnoxious guy?

He's a normal guy.

if so then i'm glad to be abnormal (in the sense that i can take stress without lashing out against internet trolls, cursing a lot, or threatening to kill myself or ex-partners who abandoned our games)

Most of the people in this thread are too close to be objective about these things. That's why I said it was getting mad Walter Day and Robert Mruczek in here. They were too close to the story of the movie and were(are?) obsessed with their version of the story, and trying to tell it. Nobody cares.

i think that this thread is approaching 20 pages shows that at least some people care. and sure, the average viewer doesn't care about the fact that the movie lied about saying the ex-business partner declined to be in the movie and vilified him when the story may have been more complex than that, but the people who know that guy apparently care. don't those people who care about the real story deserve the right to talk about it, even if most people don't care about it?

i mean, to use an analogy, lance armstrong was recently charged with doping. nobody really cares except bikers or fans of biking. but to those people, they care a whole lot. he's a very controversial person within that community, accused of using bribes and payoffs to twist lab results, and former masseuses and ex-teammates of his saying they found syringes, etc. -- but again nobody really cares outside of that community. but still, does it make sense to go to a lance armstrong thread in a biking forum and say "stop talking about this, nobody cares"?

Yeah, makes me feel that specially because we belong to this community, we are supposed to either not cre enough, or not have our opinions demoted because we are too intimate. Fuck that, thats why the facebook movie is full of bullshit. Makes me feel we are in the misinformation age. Because the people who care are not fuking relevant. All that matters in an interesting story and bullshit, not honest portrayals.

Specially becuase these three gys are supposed to represent the indie game scene to non indie asholes. SO all they get i that we like platformers. Here is a hint, I like pltaformers, but you wont ever see me making one, not even for a fucking tutorial.

Not sure I count because I havent made indie games, just private game mods and no one gives a shit about those.

Thanks.

someone can have great virtues and great faults, but i don't really understand great virtues *making up* for great faults

for instance, martin luther king jr. was one of the greatest people in history. he also (many believe) cheated on his wife. the former doesn't excuse the latter, just as the latter doesn't make the former any less great. the two should be judged independently, because for all intents and purposes they are unrelated

(also, making fez isn't exactly "normal" either. it takes a special kind of person to work on a game and finish it, so that makes the descriptor of "normal" even less applicable. normal people don't make indie games)

I agree with that. What I mean is, everyone is fucked. Some people are a lot wiser than others, but basically we're all numb-skulls. Being successful is hard, being in the spotlight is hard. I don't know.

A lot of people are hating on Blow and Fish. Fish slammed Japan that one time. Whatever. Friggin' Jesus was called the son of Satin by the local wise dudes. I think when you push yourself hard your flaws show.

Critiquing flaws is fine. Some people are kind of speaking down to these guys like we're not any crazier. When you push it, you'll become crazy. There's so few of us, I don't know why we've gotta hate on one another. We've got one main-stream movie. I like it. Those guys aren't like me, but I see a lot of similarities. I draw strength from it.

Whatever. It's all circumstance anyway.

side note but i always felt that counted; i feel that people who make mods, especially "total conversion" mods or mods where the game is drastically changed, are just as much indies as people who make games from scratch. one of my big inspirations to become an indie game developer came out of playing and attempting to make a few sc1 mods; back then i was amazed at how much more creative sc1 modders were (as a totality) than blizzard. the tower defense genre came out of sc1 mod scene, for example, so without the existence sc1 modders they'd be no plants vs zombies, no defense grid, no dungeon defenders, no immortal defense (haha), etc.

@toast_trip - actually i haven't seen that many people hating on blow at all. could you give an example? i felt that blow came off extremely well in the film

i did see some slight criticism over the review score thing -- some people said that he should be happy to get 10/10's and reactions like soulja boy's, even if those people didn't notice what he felt made the game great. i partially agree with that but i also completely understand working so hard to add stuff to the game and then nobody even noticing those parts
