Did you guys know most games are about murder??

Some times bad things happen in games.

I missed lunch, dinner will have to compensate.

I wanna play a viking simulator where you find a fishing village, burn it to the ground, kill all the men, rape all the women, then drink until sweet oblivion

Phubans I bet you'd love tumblr, it's where all the misguided social justice clowns congregate

To add something useful to the discussion, instead of me just being clever, this reminds me of the recent interview with the designer of a FPS game, where the guys asking questions looked like a jerk for wanting to making war games more "authentic".

The designer kept saying he was making an "entertainment product". So he has to go home at night and work through how to make war, murder, justified/unjustified killing fun and entertaining. I know rape and murder are very different (war is sometimes consensual, maybe) but Tomb Raider has landed in the same area of trying to make something horrible entertaining, but only now people are up in arms about it.

ANTHONY SAVE ME WITH YOUR MASSIVE PLASMA RIFLE BY WHICH I MEAN COCK

Well, okay maybe not the whole rape part. But I mean the whole trying to make main character "more of a woman" and doing it in really awful ways.

I really, really doubt that this apparent rape scene will make it into the finished product -- but if it does, it'll surely be a terrible covering of the topic. It's like comic books, in which any time they want to give a female character a troubled past they wheel out the old rape theme. It is never a male character, and that's going to be true in videogames for the foreseeable future as well.

UH male characters get raped in comic books all the time, as part of their character development.

Berserk: Main character raped as a child by racist caricature, learned how to use a huge sword to fight off much bigger rapists. I'm serious about this. This was a big part of the plot. Someone back me up, here.

Spider Man: Peter Parker raped by his uncle, which gave him spider-powers (his uncle was a spider). This was the original story, they retconned it later. Not many people know this.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom: The cultists raped him in the comic book version. They dwelled on this scene for two whole issues. The second issue was the same as the first, but with new art covering different angles.

Superman: Origin story involved him being raped by a golem that loved to commit crimes (the golem was also made of kryptonite).

Batman: Raped by his parents, the guy that killed his parents, and at one point a swarm of bats.

My point is it's NOT just female characters that are raped or threatened with rape to make their stories adult and mature and grim and dark and exciting. There's nothing strange or creepy about the Tomb Raider reboot at all. It's definitely not using sexual assault as titillation for what they assume is a primarily male audience. An audience that wants to feel like they're protecting the defenseless, battered, shivering Lara, while also getting a half-boner.

Also Phubans what the hell prompted you to try to discuss this here?

Also I admit, I haven't played Tomb Raider beyond the first two games. But isn't she supposed to be some sort of bad ass Indiana Jones type figure?

Her finding herself in this type of situation or being helpless to stop it reminds me a lot of Samus being scared of Ridley.

Then again, at least this has the decency to call itself a reboot. I suppose it would be another thing altogether if this were the same character who had survived far worse. I wish Other M happened to do something like that.

I liked to dive into the void, hitting the ground head-first from a great distance.

I could spend hours going up slopes, reaching to the ledges, setting up the dive, and make Lara taste the rock/grass.

LOVED IT!

That alone gave me great satisfaction and amused me for hours. I never completed a single level of Tomb Raider because of it.

I want to revive the same feeling. Will I have it?

In all likelihood, you're going to bust a nut over this new one. It's a game made for you and other members of the proud RYONA community.

I don't really want to talk about rape anymore, but this was posted today:
http://www.destructoid.com/when-gamer-guilt-goes-awry-why-i-still-love-tomb-raider-229373.phtml

It's a bit long, but has high hopes that Lara is just a weak human, rather than a weak woman. Someone who actually gets stronger after conflict (like a human!), rather than after a man allows her access to her weapons. Hopefully this is the case, I love character progressions, even if I know she's just going to get more murderous and revengency.

What's disgusting about Norse heritage?

(PS basically every human civilization and a good number of species practiced the viking method)
