http://store.steampowered.com/app/42170/

So this game was released on Steam very recently. I made an impulse purchase based on all the information on the Krater website, and I haven't been disappointed so far.

My first impression of the game is that it's very Diablo-like in gameplay, but more lighthearted and humorous in tone. It also seems a bit non-linear in that I am able to explore the world map without being hindered by "plot boulders" or anything like that.

The game takes place in "post-apocalyptic Sweden", the currency is Kronor, and most of the game's characters have Swedish names, although the game is fully playable even for those who only understand English. I'm from Sweden myself, so I find it very amusing to look for references to Swedish culture while I'm playing. One of the early game enemies is called the Brölbjörn, which literally means "Roar Bear", but the word used for roar here is extremely silly and rarely heard in normal conversation.

On the negative side, the game is a little buggy at the moment and some features seem to be missing quite conspicuously (for example the co-operative mode). You can't grow attached to your starting characters as they become obsolete at some point (they can only gain 5 out of the 15 possible ranks, then you need to go recruit better guys). Also, most of the quests seem to be simple "fetch this" or "kill these" deals, and it can be a bit hard to follow the plot of the game because it throws a lot of proper nouns at you and expects you to remember what's what. But I haven't played very much of the game at all yet, so I'll wait until I'm done with it before I leave my final verdict.

Looks great, I will definitely watch this and maybe buy if I have some spare money. What's interesting for me is that they use "No mandatory connection to an online service:" as a Key Feature and I expect it to be a trend for some time after Diablo 3 release.

I'd advise caution as it's made by Fatshark and they don't have much of a reputation.

Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 pretty much killed the series for good (yeah I know BC2009 did that too, but Capcom wanted to keep going with the "Rearmed" name as a series until BCR2 put an end to that).

They also made Lead and Gold which has the worst netcode I've ever experienced in my life. It was also just a very average, generic FPS with a western theme and nothing that stood out about it.

I'm not surprised to hear the negatives. Missing and buggy features seem to be par for the course for them. They've yet to make a game that isn't broken or rather dull in some way.

Appreciated. I admittedly had never heard of the company before, so that wasn't something I took into account at the time.

I played the game some more yesterday and I've reached the second hub town. The combat does get a little repetitive after a while because the soldiers don't unlock new abilities as they rank up, they just get more slots for you to put upgrades in (which increases their stats or the effect of an ability). Also, I would've liked if the recruitable soldiers had more variety - all the Bruisers/Regulators/etc have the same skills so it doesn't really matter which one of them you choose to get.

As for positive things, I really like the atmosphere of the game's areas. They're very pretty to look at and the music changes in a dynamic manner depending on what you're doing at the time (fighting or just looking around).

I thought it looked interesting, until I saw that it was made by Fatshark. This RPS review just confirms what I suspected based on past experience with Fatshark games:

They're also working on War of the Roses which Paradox Interactive (well Gordon Van Dyke, anyway) has been hyping up to be the next Mount and Blade. I pity anyone who actually believes that though.

That's not to say that Fatshark makes bad games, but everything they make is very flawed and mediocre.
