Pyxel Edit is a drawing application aimed at making pixel art. It has features to make it faster and easier to make low resolution art like tile sets for games. It's made using Adobe Air, runs on Windows and Mac, and is currently in beta. You can get it at http://pyxeledit.com.

What's special about it?
You can draw freeform like in any other program, you can also draw and place tiles. If you have multiple instances of a tile and edit one, they all update. This still works if some of the instances are flipped or rotated. This is really nice when making tile sets, as you can instantly see how all the tiles work together as you draw them. This feature is inspired by the awesome Pixothello and Cosmigo Pro Motion, but taken one step further.

Tileset importing
Pyxel Edit can import images of tilesets or mockups and identify all the unique tiles automatically, which is great for editing and rearranging old tile sets or doing edits of mockups.

Tilemap exporting
Export your canvas tilemap in XML or plain text format for super quick game prototyping.

How much does it cost?
The beta is and will remain free. In the future there might be a pro version with more features.

Future features
In addition to adding lots of small features, new tools, better menus and polishing the UI and stuff, animation support is planned.

This does look really good, but why do you need us to sign up before we can download it?

Thanks.
The beta was private before, I decided to make it public but kept the login so that I can send mail updates when I release major new versions.
You won't need to register to download when it goes out of beta, so if you want you can wait until then.

Oh, there's already a thread..
I posted one on the art board, haha.

Great work, makes it incredibly easy to make and manage tilesets!
You should really make the sign-up optional though, I think a lot of people are suspicious about that sort of thing. Writing your email once would be fine.

Thanks. Well, yea... I might remove it.

Edit: I removed it. You can still subscribe to the mailing list if you want but it's not mandatory.

I changed the licensing. The beta is now totally free to use, also for commercial work. Beer!

Looks great, and feels nice. One thing I would suggest is, with pen tool, add a feature that draws a line (from the previous pixel) if you push Shift down while moving the pixel around on the canvas, and outputs the line itself on mousedown (like in Gimp).

Looks like an advanced version of Pixothello :D
Will this have an animation-preview feature as well?

I can only save and export as .pyxel. :<
Also, ctrl-a (select all) no ctrl - c?

I am not a very good artist, but I love how well this program has allowed me to make quick, reasonably good looking "placeholder" tiles for a small project I am working on. I will definitely buy a real license when it is available. Congrats on the great work man  Beer!

You can hold shift and click-and-drag to make straight lines, it's a bit different but the same end result. I see how that's handy for making sun feather shaped things though.

Yes, animation is planned at some point, it will work a bit different from Pixothello though.

File > Export tileset should do the trick. Or if you want to get the individual tile png's, you can get hacky and unzip the .pyxel file to rip out it's innards. Tongue Selections are not implemented yet, but I'm working on it.

Using the program to make a few tiles I've notice a lot of stuff I wanted to give feedback on.

- Zooming with ctrl + and ctrl - is a great way to zoom with regular intervalls like, 50% 100% 150% 200%, that I really miss from photoshop. Just having keys for it helps since my wacom can be wonky with scrolling.

- When zooming out I almost lost my canvas which was kinda scary (how would I ever find it) Afterwards I realized I could just save and open the file again.
There should probably be a zoom limit.

- When selecting a color with the colordropper it doesn't update in the mixer unless you click on the color in the color window. Also colors sometimes snap to black when using the mixer and changing color.

- It would be nice if the bucket tool had the ability to fill everything in the same color. (mostly because I can't figure out the color replacement tool)

- Pressing enter when saving asks if you want to replace the file, yet it doesn't save it. You have to press the button for it to be saved.

Also, I noticed you can save as .png when you export if you change the file extension. But if you write .png when saving as pyxel it becomes .png.pyxel.
You should automatically change the file extension to .png when using export, for clarification and ease of use.

And I think it goes without saying that I'll be buying this as soon as you release it Smiley
Keep up the good work!

This was also a problem I noticed. It only costs me like 5 seconds of time, but if it cost me 0 seconds of time that would be even better
