I think the coder graphic aesthetic works well. A clear abstract style is better than a messy fiddly one with no clear direction. But it needs transitions between all the states.

All of the elements "pop" into position. Aside from not being "juicy", the user has no indication as to what they've just done. They've leapt from one state to another, for all they know they could be experiencing a bug in the game.

Seconding this. Most puzzle games are targeted at casuals, so they look horrible and gaudy.
