Wait, which is the part where 'Kinect got pwned'? These are the same ball park, but it's two different scales. Kinect was designed for full body play, this device is at the finger level. It's a matter of scale, the project I used to work on did arms and hands. The main issue is, Kinect(and other 3d cameras) maxes out the bandwidth of USB.

Mostly in the part where I can actually see myself using this, whereas I'd never want to play a game using Kinect.

Have you tried Dance central? Trust me, Full body games are way more interesting then trying to write in the air with your finger.

It's just that I don't want to play a game with my full body. I prefer using a controller or a touchscreen. This thing seems like it can turn pretty much anything into working like a touchscreen, just without actually touching the screen. It also seems quite interesting for stuff beyond games. Imagine using this with Sculptris, for example.

Touching is important, notice that he doesn't actually select anything using the controller, he has to use the mouse to interact with Windows. There isn't a gesture for confirmation. Also the camera is situated underneath, which puts the dominant control plane perpendicular to the display. Believe me, I've been 'imagining' using systems like this for 3 years. Sure, it probably isn't completely integrated with Windows in that video, but I can't see why it wouldn't be able to?
Also, the latency seems absolutely terrible in those 3 year old videos. The low latency and precision is exactly what's impressing me in the Leap videos.

The tech is also 3+ years old, that video was created before the Kinect was even announced. The latency is due to having to smooth the target point, it was confusing to players because of minor movements being perceived by the camera. We had improved it greatly after that, unfortunately I'm not allowed to show the later videos, which had the game demos I worked on.  I mean, it looks neat, but they're selling the same stuff that was being sold 3 years ago. I don't think their system is ready yet. I'd like to get my hands on one to test it out.

Do you have any idea what kind of tech is in it? Is it just camera and infrared like the Kinect?

Yeah, It's Ir. if they are using a two point system, it's conceivably possible that they are triangulating the signal, they said that the technology is 4 years old, so yeah. Technically, USB can only handle 4 channels about the resolution of the IR on the Kinnect, you can get twice the resolution if you get rid of RGB. Well of course scale matters. Up that close you can do a lot of things... heck even time of flight might work. Also notice he is in a dark room with some "bristol" blocking the light from one side. I hope you like playing in the dark(jk, this can be overcome, especially that close). Also, the Kinect is a 3D scanner, it produce 3D geometry of whatever it scans. I am not sure this leap camera produce geomtry, it might just track objects. Anyway, yea, not even comparable. But a bird told me newer better Kinect like devices are about to come out from another big company.
