>Still greentexting in green

This doesn't go in DevLogs as it's not a game, so to plop it in General is a good idea. Inanimate said I could...

The >2K12 is a modern-styled cocktail standup arcade cabinet with a style inspired by Web 3.0 websites. I remember hearing a while back that a few of us wanted to build our own arcade cabinets. Why not do that for a summer project? Technically, planning for >2K12 began right after the semester ended at the end of May, but barely any progress was made. Since then, I have been...acquiring games...and started working up a list of required parts. But enough of introductory crap, let's bring in some content!

Style

So here's the original sketch.

At least try Bagman.

After many a day on Dribbble, searching for inspiration and good colors, I have the palette down pat.

Thankfully, I'm not one of these bozos that paste inkjet-printed mascots everywhere. Ah, the joys of being young. Fun fact: Sonic Adventure 2, a game you guys might have enjoyed, is now eleven years old. Not so young now, are you?

As for parts, I have the Excel spreadsheet right here. Copy-pasted and formatted for your foruming convenience.

Parts

After popping in a bit of Diablo Swing Orchestra and Megadeth into the WinAmp, I buckled down to a crucial matter: the innards. MAME works in a rather funny way. Everything is emulated by the CPU. The video, the audio, the logic, all of it. A video card can emulate a CRT display using HLSL effects. This impacts the performance generally. Most games work fluently enough at 800x600, medium-type HLSL effects, and a Radeon Mobility HD 4250 w/ 256MB VRAM. Unfortunately, shops really aren't carrying anything that powerful, so I'll settle on a Radeon 5450 w/ 2GB VRAM.

Good lord, and I thought I hated SQL's tables... This is sans wood and printed art.

Future going-ons, pictures, and progress will be posted in this thread. I suggest you who want to build a cabinet find some plans and get cracking. Upon completion, I shall also prepare a game specifically for it. Maybe Udducted would be resurrected.

Awesome! I remember hearing you throw this idea around in other threads, so it's cool to see that you're finally going through with the project!

I'm digging the setup you've posted. It's got that sleek, modern thing going on, and I'm interested to see how the style fits with the wood paneling. You get points for puttin' a Seimitsu stick in there. You lose points for pushing me one step closer to building my own stick.

Though I gotta wonder: why don't you put a CRT in it? That way, you won't have to deal with the HLSL performance issues, and you'll also get perfect-quality CRT effects too! Plus I'd assume CRTs are pretty easy to find for cheap, as most people are tossing them out in favor of flat-screens and the like.

And no, Bagman really is that bad. Game'll eat your soul right out. And that is terrible.

Not only are CRTs getting rarer to find, but their parts seems to be degrading over time. The last CRT monitors I found at Goodwill have problems with angles. Plus the amount of CRT monitors at any thrift store is already slim, with favor for projection TVs. Though the search for any form of 4:3 monitor is getting a little less fruitless. Plus it's mostly a space issue.

Okay, Bagman isn't the greatest. Crush Roller's pretty good. If you don't have the space, just build a control panel by hacking a USB gamepad or order a kit from Suzo-Happ.

It has been acknowledged that these same parts can be found for 75¢ each here.

Two round mini-buttons will serve as 1UP and 2UP start button, adding two more buttons to the list. Either way, this reduced the cost in parts. The total is now $319.06 (-$0.80). The OP is being updated with this new information.

And I managed what I hope to be the final form of the control panel. At least changes wouldn't be difficult if the readings for the joystick washer were different.

Sorry to interject, but is the 4chan reference really necessary?

It just seems to cheapen the worth or credibility of your project.

Name, no. It's ~~stylish~~, as a hipster would put it.
Subtitle, what's it to ya? Who, Me?

I shall be updating the OP with a card I was recommended to:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150581\

This new video card is cheaper than previous selection. The total is now  $304.06 (-$15.90).

Cheap, fits the PC I had plans for, and even has a VGA port. And space is getting very limited now for this in the garage. Currently in the process for ordering the parts to build the shell for. A cocktail probably isn't the best of ideas considering this. The garage is too hot for a PC to run in, with triple-digit temperatures Fahrenheit, so testing will be done in my room. Getting rid of a shelf and packing up a Sega Genesis to make room allows for such space for placement. A very, very thin standup cabinet would work. Inspiration for the style branches off from the Woody and mostly from a custom Virtual Boy.

I'm sure that in the monitor area, there will be quite a bit of space. CPWizard looks like it would be a possible way to utilize the area, with a second monitor. A USB one. Further Sketchup model pictures will be incoming, hopefully by the end of the week at the end of planning.

Oh, and since external funding isn't going into this, this project is canceled until further notice.
