I'm K.hermann and i design mainly in 2d
i'm also a 2d digital animator (frames by frames)

I love this style, it reminds me of illustrations from one or several famous illustrators who worked in the late 70s/early 80s , but I can't put any name on them unfortunately

You should never stop, everything is an opportunity, making project, participating project, participating forums, community, events, etc... But have a distinct voice, a niche, a story, something that make people remember who you are and follow you, even if it mean creating a character, surf on expectation and projection people have on you to develop a hook to either exaggerate or subvert.

Take the aspect that isn't common in the field you participate and up it. For exemple being an african give a unique perspective on things, whether you like it or not and it affect your art, for example you use an imagery that remember people of pop culture muslim (girl with hijab) you can play with that. It's matter of being "interesting" by both playing with familiarity (for example common love of anime, game culture, etc...) and strangeness (the type of world you do anchored in your culture).

Just push it, it's not just about you, but how you brand yourself, there is sweet spot between character and you to develop to sell yourself. Does people have a direct image of "you" when they heard about you? Think about phil fish (choke on it), and various figure, they have distinct public "persona" even if it is accidental.

It help a lot when you try to make contact.

So YES promote yourself hard and don't worry to fail : P

But it's not that easy when other doesnt want to

you can also proposed yourself to work on other's project, it also give you visibility, especially if pick the right one to work for. However when you using your difference beware of having "antagonistic tone" with it, offering the genuine difference of perspective is better.
