I think it's pretty shallow how many people have stopped playing TF2 purely for the fact that it is being exploited for money. Next time someone tells me they don't care about graphics so long as the game is fun, I'm going to tell them to play TF2.

I'm not sure I'm aware of many people who quit playing because of the hats and advertisements, but I know a lot of people who quit because of the new weapons. there are so many and they're an awful mess. the game was better off without them, and that's why I stopped playing.

Graphics vs aesthetics. TF2 was designed as it was to facilitate gameplay. Watch Valve's paper on the artistic choices in TF2 - And then marvel how they stomped all over their own brilliant design. Additionally, you're dismissing the fact that there are as of writing about 150 weapons in the game. It's not just about aesthetics, but that you just can't play the game anymore. When TF2 was released, you could easily identify a class and their weapon (and thus, could make informed decisions in the game world). Now... it's one big clusterfuck where you can't tell anything apart anymore. That impacts gameplay.

I play TF2 fairly regularly and I don't really feel like I have a problem telling classes apart. It doesn't have the original simplicity, but I think the developers realized as the game grew how it was to be played, and that is sort a silly, light fun gameplay, not super competitive. Fun hats and crazy weapons contribute to the "new" TF2 aesthetic, and while it's different, I don't think it's any less valuable than the original. Heavies still look like heavies and snipers still look like snipers. Weapons and hats don't dramatically affect the silhouette of each class, which is really the biggest characteristic the artists sought to develop as a visual differentiator.

Additionally, if you don't like it, there are vanilla TF2 servers that disallow loadouts. Want a more team oriented experience? tf2lobby.com can help. (Of course it's more competitive)

Source Filmmaker is out officially in a private beta now too. Since this is the last class, it seems that Valve is passing on its movie-making to the users.
