New title screen menu!

New features:
  • Much, MUCH improved background image (the water's all wavy too!).
  • Actually, much improved graphics all around. The word Vertex is the only thing that didn't change.
  • Multiple save files, as well as a copy and a delete function for save files, and a visual preview of the status of each save file.
  • New intro sequence (not pictured).
  • I'm going to try to implement custom controls, and see where that leads. And also controller support, if I can figure it out. I hear people like controller support.
  • Other stuff that's difficult to describe in bullet points.

Hi everyone! I was contacted recently by Highsight from Twitch TV, who wanted to feature Vertex on his show, Indie Insights. After fixing up some bugs and making everything I wanted presentable, I sent him a demo. The show starts TONIGHT at 8:00pm EST. The video will later be posted on YouTube so if you miss it tonight, you'll still be able to see it later. But it'd be great to have you come check it out tonight!

That title screen makes me want to play this!

I guess the supporting gameplay gifs and stuff help too, but just saying.

For anybody who missed the live stream, here's the YouTube video of

. Thanks again so much to Highsight (check out his Twitch TV channel here) for featuring Vertex on his show, I had a great time watching and chatting with the other viewers!

For the past 1-2 years I've been doing a lot of cosmetic work on old parts of the game and adding new stuff to the first half of the game. Which has been great, but I'm getting kind of sick of not getting any closer to the end of the game. So! I'm making a plan of action for how I'm going to reach the end of the game, and then fill out the rest in the middle. The first step is an area that will be located in the Poison Forest, where a team of freedom fighters has their hideout. This is Naomi, the first one you meet.

Hello everyone! Summer's back, which means it's time to get back to work on Vertex! For the last 6 months my computer actually wasn't able to run Game Maker 7 anymore for some unknown reason... so after much grief including a system image restoration and two factory resets, I can finally game dev again. Here's a preview of what I did today!

Really nice little rabbits! Are they evil / dangerous, or are they just "mobs"?

Working on damage counters and a leveling system! The current idea is for upgrades to cost pearls and gold, since those didn't have much of a use before. It should encourage more exploration, searching the nooks and crannies of levels to find enough goodies for upgrades.

Changing these HP and damage numbers and adding a leveling system like this is going to mean a lot more play testing to balance things out.

(Sorry you can't see the whole HUD in these gifs. My screen isn't big enough for LICEcap to capture the whole window  Durr...?)

Redesigning the town, and adding a new background to make it more interesting! Still a work in progress.

Thought it would be fun to record my process for drawing that tower in the background and make a time lapse video! Then at the end you can see how it looks in context.

A new tileset for the fire level, and a big new baddie too! This one was a tough challenge both on the animating front as well as the AI front, but the result is looking pretty good. Looking forward to building some levels with him.
