I've been thinking to myself "I need to enter one of these things" - I come by to check and think "Hm. I have 4 hours. Let's see what we can do," then I re-read it after finishing a little something and think "Wait. Am I already late?"

I saw the "15 1/2 hours" post, but my math skills are just not today. (I'm so tired..)

Alas! Here's a thing I made. I haven't the slightest what game it'd be in, but I'm assuming something tribal.

Hey, everyone!  I'm completely new to the forums, but saw this challenge a while ago via KomradeJack's Twitter and decided to give it a shot.

Below is the link to my composition.  Note that it's 1:03 long--that's because I decided to go ahead and give it a loop myself so you can hear the transition.  The first real measure actually has a pick-up... hopefully that's not against the rules (if it is, Jack, I ask that you kindly dismiss the first hit Beer!).

Oh, and also, there's a version with rhodes and without rhodes on the link... my original idea was not to include the extra instrument, but I added it in last-minute and thought it might be of some interest to people.

Thanks!  I've been enjoying listening to everyone's work so far... there's some great stuff here.  Also, I invite anyone who's enjoyed my work to check out my blog, where I've detailed my thoughts and the process behind this work (just click the banner below).

Wow! 14 entires!  Is that a record?  OK here we go:

I am in no way qualified to give great feedback for every single one of your fantastic entires.  So I will give feedback with a maximum of 3 words.

Muuurgh - Mr. AC (Keep Your Cool) http://soundcloud.com/scorevgm/sets/mr-ac-keep-your-cool
-Keep the Rhodes

Pcmx - Maiden http://soundcloud.com/pcmx/maiden
-Fantastic 90's aesthetic

AND THE WINNER IS: VDZ - For The Colony!

VDZ's entry was able to capture a cool battle theme melody in the short time allotted.  For the Colony! has two sections that are very much the same except section A had the melody and section B does not.  This gives the listener's ear a good rest before the whole thing loops back.  The loop itself was done very well and even included pickup notes which smooths out the loop.  I feel some entries did not fully understand what I mean by "loopable" (its a 30 second song, not an excerpt and should be treated as a whole song) but VDZ nailed it.

All of the tracks were great and everyone should be proud of their work.  Hopefully everyone learned a little bit and made some friends along the way (just like a good RPG).

VDZ is now in charge of the next challenge (Number 10 or X) whenever he is ready.  As someone who just hosted the contest with an unprecedented 14 entires I will suggest to him and all future hosts to keep the following things in mind:

-Keep the challenge simple and easy to understand
-Give everyone a good amount of time to do the contest
-Advertise the contest to keep new blood incoming
-Don't do a contest in the middle of a holiday

Congrats, VDZ!  Yours happened to be one of my favorites, too.  It's not your typical high-energy battle theme; instead, you gave us a good example that showed that they don't necessarily need to be that way.  The spacey feel was there, making it more laid back, but there's still  pulse driving the assumed battle.  Also, it seems like it could be pretty versatile, decent for a space stage in a fighting game or in an action/adventure.

Nice work, everyone!  Can't wait for the next one.
