Never opened a PS3 controller, but DIY fixes on HIDs are often easy and effective.

No they aren't. They usually involve searching digikey for replacement parts and using reflow tools to resolder SMD components

Usually when a HID fucks up, it's because of mechanical flakiness, not outright broken parts. In that case I'd just buy a new one.

If you're going to get a new one anyway there's no harm in picking it apart first.

More often then not (especially in the case of impact damage) it is due to the magnets under the rubber padding between the buttons and triggers becoming misaligned and thus the controller sporadically registers button presses (when the magnet connects with the sensor below it that is what registers the button press).

It is a pretty easy thing to fix once you've got the controller open, all you really have to do is realign the magnet (and in most kinds of controllers they are usually glued to the rubber padding which is specifically shaped to fit the controller, that makes the aligning much easier).
