I quite like the OUYA as a no fuss budget console. I was very sceptical during, and even after, the kickstarter, but if you ignore all the 'this a new paradigm for the industry' crap and take it for what it is I think it's succeeded.

So, what's the verdict on it for you guys?
imo, I don't think it lived up to the hype. It's left me a bit disappointed.
I was prepared for it to bomb or do all right. I'm a little disappointed but not surprised. It's hard to make a console, and the dev team underestimated it - typical stuff. But things like this take effort. One step at a time. "Argh, you're only on the 5th stair, and now only the 6th? We'll never get to the top."

whatever it is said, they can improve over time, waiting for improvement, but it's a niche hobbyist console, which is fine when you understand that and set your expectation accordingly (as soon as they fix the pad)

Would be fun if someone would have the money and balls to come up with a real console using a fixed pc set up with a proper intel desktop cpu, gtx titan etc. and kick ps4 and xbox one in the ass.

You do realize a GTX Titan alone still costs $1000, right? That console would cost like $2000 easily .. and would have to be enormous to avoid overheating issues.

The issue with OS is more handling driver with pc components

I always considered consoles a luxury and not meant to be powered by mobile batteries, tripple A console ftw baby.

btw console have some nifty optimisation not availaible on pc, especially considering bottlenecks. But we don't need a gfx titan, we can still have a range of "TVPCgame" hardware at reasonable price.

I have something better, how about an optimized titan for the specific build. Imagine nvidia doing that with cooperation with intel instead of that project shield. I am just poking some fun here but it is sometimes cool to imagine what potentially could be possible when people would be ready to pay for the "real deal".

@themsalltook - i don't see the point in buying a 100$ console for a single game that will come out on PC soon for much cheaper than that
Yep, that's certainly one way to look at it. $100 gets you TowerFall 6 months earlier than you'd be able to get it on PC (6 months is the length of its Ouya exclusivity, certainly no guarantee that it'll be out on PC exactly on its 6 month anniversary). If you're not interested in developing for the thing and you're OK with waiting for TowerFall, there isn't a whole lot of appeal I can see at the moment. Seems like a good chance that'll change in the near future, assuming devs stay interested in the thing. Speaking for myself, it was barely on my radar before it came out; I might not be the only one coming late to the party, so things could easily heat up in the coming months.

And not to get me wrong, I like both ends: the beauty of an economic console/handheld, and also the excitement for less bottlenecked pure power, a beast of a machine.

I think that would be the issue. I'd probably go for Linux (secure / free), but it could be difficult to find a Linux-friendly low cost (relatively) high power GPU. With Steam coming to Linux, a console before the SteamBox could both help and hurt it (help to make more developers port games to Linux, hurt the SteamBox because it would be doing what the SteamBox would do).

what we need right now is a replacement for windows that would make a perfect kickstarter
