id rather have one analog stick up in the top left just cuz i'd rather use the analog stick than the dpad and it's more comfortable up there

That's quite interesting. I actually prefer the analog stick lower for the same reason (ie. when I'm using the analog stick, I prefer it level). However, I'm mostly thinking dual-analog games here. I could see my preference changing for a game that used one analog and the buttons.

From that, the (current, concept) Ouya controller would be your preferred layout then? Assuming that you were playing a game that used the left analog controller at least.

Looks like the Kickstarter has just closed. $7.4m. Wow. At one point I was wondering if they'd crack $6m. I guess they did.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console

All I can say is that if they were hoping to pull this off with $0.9m in Kickstarter funding, they had better succeed with $7.4m.

They would probably use most of it for marketing, because to be honest, what they are trying to do already exist as I showed in the NVIDIA video.
All the games that will be on OUYA are going to be on other Android devices anyway, so what's exactly the difference between OUYA and just pluging your tablet to the TV and a gamepad?

Edit: On second thought, there is the price.
If they really can sell you a console at $99 of the same capabilities as an Android tablet with a Tegra 3, then they might be on to somthing.
Unless of course the $99 price tag is just a marketing trick and there are going to be hidden costs.

i honestly dont care about the dpad i just think it's funny they had so much trouble designing one. i use analog sticks for platformers and stuff anyway.
It's because Nintendo has a patent on the only good dpad design I think.

i prefer the PS3 controller over the xbox 360 one (i have both). it's lighter, has a  built-in battery, better face buttons, and the sticks seem fine to me. the only thing the 360 has over the ps3 is the triggers. l2 and r2 on the ps3 are garbage.

Wikipedia says the patent expired in 2005.

what they are trying to do already exist as I showed in the NVIDIA video.

The link looked like a tech demo for the Tegra 3 and Miracast (wireless TV output)- is that right?

so what's exactly the difference between OUYA and just pluging your tablet to the TV and a gamepad?

As for the difference, I'm guessing:

Tablet + Gamepad: Multiple hardware specs, multiple controller types, but secondary display in-hand. Somewhat fragmented market.

Ouya: One hardware spec, minimum controller spec, app market for this spec. No in-hand display. Small (presently non-existent), but non-fragmented market.

Of course, you could always (in theory) pick a specific tablet and controller spec, put together an app market and a lot of hype and sell it as a brand. In practice it probably wouldn't really work though, unless you made the hardware or set up a sweet series of deals.

A lot of this whole thing is about presenting a brand, a spec to target, giving developers a reason to look at it, and gamers a reason to buy it.

For Ouya specifically, I'd say they're doing well enough on the latter point since they've got so many people to throw money at it, when the final system doesn't even exist yet.

I feel so in the dark in controller conversations nowadays. I haven't kept up with controllers on the more modern consoles. Probably as I haven't owned many of the modern consoles. :}

The last KickStarter update said that they're working with Namco Bandai, which is interesting.

From the KS page:

Quote
"NAMCO BANDAI Games and OUYA are currently in active discussions to bring some of the world's biggest gaming properties to the exciting new open gaming platform. NAMCO BANDAI brings with it a rich history of iconic gaming franchises, from classics like PAC-MAN and GALAGA, to seminal franchises like TEKKEN and Ridge Racer, and we're excited to explore how we can work with OUYA to bring some great titles to the forthcoming console."
-- Carlson Choi, Vice President of Marketing, NAMCO BANDAI Games America, Inc.

They're also adding support for four controllers and Plex. I still would've liked to see it really in action, but this is still good stuff to hear anyway.

$30 per controller, though. I'll wait until there's an Ouya game I'll actually play with four players; they're common on some consoles (such as the Wii with SSB, Wii Sports, Guitar Heroes/Rock Bands, Kirby, more) while on others they're rare or nonexistent (on PS2 I've only ever played Tekken Tag with four players, and on Mega Drive I only know of Gauntlet 4 and Pete Sampras Tennis even supporting four players, never actually played with four).

EDIT: Oh right, NBA Jam also supported 4. Still haven't played with four yet, though.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't get four - might get one extra eventually, but I'd probably just stick with the one if I bought the Ouya. However, it's good that they support four, so that developers could make nice party games, like the games you mentioned. I also hope they consider a built-in battery for future controllers, or a purchaseable battery pack, 360 style.

There's 13 hours left, you can still back the kickstarter.
