yeah, I tend to do that unless I see a huge spider. Then I lose focus and try to get a bomb in it's web.

I should try the ghost-less Spelunky sometime. I feel like that one enemy sucked all the fun out of the game for me when I played it back in the days.
Part of the reason the game is fun is because of the ghost, it keeps the pressure on = tension & excitement.

Dicking around with the ghost to maximise your loot value is pretty fun (for something that's basically grinding).

PLaying the XBLA version just makes me want to mod the PC one. But not even to make it like the xbl one, i think just to mess around with it.
I made an AI for it once, spent about a month trying to get it to complete the game. I think it only got the forest levels twice.
I should try that again.

Good for you, I suppose. To me, it sends mixed signals regarding what the game wants you to do. It punishes you for making mistakes, which encourages patience, but it also punishes you for taking too much time, which encourages rushing. That makes it not fun for me, and you're free to disagree. This isn't a problem with other roguelikes that I play because they're turn-based, so I have all the time I want to make decisions in them.

Well, they should have some sort of hunger mechanic, the purpose of which is to eliminate grinding as a successful strategy. Now, you do bring up the point that the tension is higher because there isn't a difference between planning time and acting time in Spelunky as there is in most Roguelikes. I'd say the ghost hardly ever comes into play, unless you are spending an excessive amount of time in a level, and that standard, patient play should never take so long that the ghost is a problem.

Ghost or not, it should technically be impossible to grind in Spelunky because there are limited resources in each level, unless there's some super cool way to generate resources out of thin air that I don't know about.

Hmm...I don't think infinite resources are required for grinding. At least not by my working definition. Although, the gambling is near infinite since you win/lose money at equal rates, so you should always gamble for as long as possible to get cheap items.

tbh I didn't even remember that there was a ghost, I've had more than a thousand lpays and I must have encountered the ghost less than a dozen times.

It warns you at 2:00 and the ghost appears at 2:30. It shouldn't be a problem unless you're trying to get everything all over the map.

I saw the blue (ice?) level for the first time tonight. On one playthrough I lucked out and got a jetpack on the first level and bought a shotgun on the second... I was fully prepared, only to die to a damn totem spike trap in the jungle because I was careless...

*BUG REPORT* Didn't think I'd ever have to do this one again, but apparently a UFO dropped into about 8-or-so yetis, all clustered together, and landed them all on an altar. Kali accepted my sacrifices, then proceeded to destablize and reboot my operating system. Apparently Spelunky is just too cool for that, and got warped to the real world or something... >.>' My setup config (joypad config, preferences) were preserved during the system reset, but my records were totally wiped. ;.; And I had a WIN!!
