I think BF3 blew any FPS or war game out the water
That's plain impossible. The best FPS made by man's hand is the original Far Cry. The best competitive shooter known to ancient men is Unreal Tournament Classic.

More true facts than yours.

I've never played Far Cry before, what's so good about it? What makes it different from every other generic FPS out there?

Gorgeous jungle-sounds and atmosphere (despite limited ressources), best A.I. and action-design, really good progression-flow despite being sandbox. No other open-world game comes even close to those qualities. And it can actually provide real stealth-gameplay, unlike crysis. Just play and love it. The game is that enjoyable (gets some messy towards the end but you won't regret your time).

Pick it up right there, you won't regret anything. Make sure it is the original Crytek-game, not the incompetent revisions of Ubisoft many people confuse it with.

Yeah, the first FarCry is far greater than any 'other generic FPS'. I remember playing hours with the demo before I got the full game and it provided more entertainment than most modern FPS do.
