Do you have an iOS device? There's a super great port of the game with all the expansions that is way cheaper than the actual game. I've played the shit out of the game on iOS. I really like it as an iPhone game, but I haven't played the physical game. It's much more like Magic than Dominion is, as far as deckbuilding games go, but it's not really a fair comparison. The expansions really make the game shine, IMO.

I do not own an iOS device. And I'm aiming to focus on physical games, for game-nights and the like.

in my experience from playing the ios version, the problem with ascension is that the random card selection makes it very hard to build a coherent deck so it just comes down to snatching up the best cards before everyone else.

Those who seek more strategy and depth may want to check out Race for the galaxy. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28143/race-for-the-galaxy

I bought this game a week ago and I love it Kiss I've played Race for the Galaxy three times so far and I'm finally starting to know what I'm doing Smiley It's great how compact it is but still you have so many choices to make.

I have played 7 Wonders quite a lot. It's a good game but after about ten plays you feel like the game hasn't anything new to offer. But the Leaders expansion is a good solution to this problem since it creates new kind of strategies and you can start planning your strategy straight from the beginning of the game.

Played Race for the Galaxy and Jaipur 30min ago with my gf. Both great relatively short games for two (or in case of Race for the Galaxy up to 4) players! So I second the recommendations Smiley

Wizard is a classic in my family.

http://brettspielwelt.de/ has some nice games to play online for free (playing online is nothing compared to playing in rl, but you might get a feeling for some games mentioned here).

Jared keeps recommending Mag·Blast to me. Anyone else have opinions on that?

Also, I forgot to mention to Sinclair: I'm probably gonna get Wrath of Ashardalon, just for the bitchin' dragon piece.

Mag Blast is a lot of fun. It's the perfect game to play between sessions of longer games. Not super deep but there's enough strategy to keep things interesting.

good!

Btw, my local boardgame store demoed the new edition of Descent the other week. I didn't play but the new components look A LOT nicer and there don't seem to be less of them (smaller box and whatnot) either.

7 Wonders seems to be pretty popular, so it's on my list now.

Small World looked very nice. It's been on my list.  Smiley

Also, still seeking more data for some:

Neuroshima Hex has gotten positive comments from CA Sinclair (always a good thing), but I was curious of other TIGer's opinions of it. It's a 2-player-plus game, which I'm on the lookout for, and the pictures of it look great, so I hope it's good.

Some games say they support 2-players-or-more, but they instead suck as 2-player games. I would like to know if the following games are actually any good with two players:

- Chrononauts
- Mag·Blast
- Pandemic

Thanks again for helping out, everybody.

It's pretty fun, if you like this kind of 'direct' competition (as in kill the other player's units). I enjoyed a few rounds with my friend, but the tension is too tiring for me. And man does this game punish mistakes Smiley

- Pandemic
I played pandemic a few times with my wife and it's really nice for two people. A bit harder than for 3 but still doable (not like some games), and you can just play on an easier difficulty setting.

I don't keep up with board/card game news, so I didn't see it! MAN I am so excited!

You caught me red-handed. I prefer competitive games to cooperative games -- I think they tell better stories and narratives, in the end. However, I'm glad to hear Pandemic is great with just 2 players -- it also sounds like a wonderful game.  Smiley
