Update:  I made some music for my game!  The tracks were created with Sunvox.

Hi, first off, idk if this is the right way to introduce myself but I'm GhostBomb, an aspiring developer and I'm new to these forums... and now I guess I know what a voxel is.  Thanks wikipedia!

Anyways, I'm looking for people to give feedback on my demo for my new Motherload inspired platformer.  It's very unpolished and still has some rather large bugs to be squashed but for the most part it plays perfectly.

Here's a link:
http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/platformer/unreal-planet-demo/8702/

I'll post more details and maybe a survey when I'm less tired.  Good night. Smiley

Edit 1: here's a screeny

and here's a little survey for maximum effectiveness!

from 1-10, how would you rate the gameplay in this game?

how would you rate the graphics/artwork?

how would you rate the interface? (things like menus and stuff)

what was the funnest part of the game? (exploration, fighting, ect)

what part of the game did you not like?

was there a time you wanted to quit because the game was too boring?

was there a time you wanted to quit because the game was too hard?

Thanks!

Why not just use bugspray for those bugs instead of squashing them and leaving a mess

I played the game. I really liked it..the design of the game is very good. The gameplay and animation was smooth and fluid and the overall concept was fresh and creative. I just got stuck at the part I was supposed to go underground, kept running out of fuel lol

Good game though. Keep up the good work Smiley

You got stuck at the part where you actually start playing the game?  That's not very good!  I think fuel might be a bit too restrictive early on...

I haven't played it yet, but I can definitely see an issue with the contrast between the foreground and background.  The background tiles should be much darker, IMO.

This... I thought the background was an unbroken rock in the foreground at first.

Looks pretty cool though.

Well, I tried messing with my bg and this is what I came up with.

I found that if I made it too dark, the foreground would start to look like it was glowing, and would make the dirt appear bright orange.

You should at least remove the contrast, if you don't want to darken it. The background shouldn't be so contrasty.

That's what I was thinking
Edit:

I'm actually liking the way this new bg came out, I've updated the game with the new version.

If you guys are gonna comment on my screenshots you should play the actual game!  I've yet to have anyone tell me they've "beat" the demo by killing the first boss, though tbh, the first boss is probably still way too hard.

Update:  Added some sound I made by messing with sfxr.

I think my favorites I've made is the bat sound and the sound it makes when something can't be destroyed with your current gun level.

I really like this; it reminds me a lot of... well, Motherload, and a bit of Spelunky in that it has monsters. I really like that. But I feel like they are too hard to kill, even for the first type. If there were a slightly easier way to kill them -- like jumping on their heads like Mario and Spelunky or hanging/peering/leaning over the edge of tiles -- then that would be awesome. Also, I lost right away on my first try (not a big deal), but I didn't have a save and had to go through the tutorial/intro again, so it would be really nice to be able to skip it somehow in case you've already done it. And one more nit-picky thing: I'm used to games that use Z to jump and X to use your weapon, so maybe you could provide a way to configure the controls. But other than those, good game! I really like it. Smiley
