Is there any way to browse & organize it except through the client, or if not is there some sort of API so that I could throw something together myself? It's remarkably bad as it is.

What particular problems are you having with it? I've never had any problems navigating it, but then, I've kept my Steam purchases within modest bounds. It's hard to have issues navigating small lists. I could understand problems rising when your library grows large enough.

right click a game in your list and then click "set category". you can then create several categories, and add each game the same way.

I don't see any reason why this wouldn't be sufficient, unless you simply never knew you could do this before.

Not being able to have sub-categories or the same game in multiple categories makes for a nightmare when organizing not too far shy of 200 entries. (including shortcuts to non-steam games/programs)

There was one time when m indie category didnt suffice and havin to reassing like 50 games became tedious. My current apporach for sub categories is having parent - current, like Strategy - RTS, Strategy - Grand, etc.

Its tedious as hell for large libraries.

there are times when i browse my libraby looking to play shit (stupid bundles and shit), and if i crave an specific genre or smth, its hard if it is not categorized.

Im not sure hwta you mean by having people not playing dsteam games, I think half of the poeple here havg large steam catalogs. Case in point: http://steamcommunity.com/id/alevice/games/

I do play my Steam games. In fact, before I filled up my backlog with the recent sales, there were only a few games in my library I hadn't played and all the ones I hadn't were things I got in HIBs that were just asides to the ones in them I really wanted. But I still really appreciate having my games organized and especially with this recent influx of games it's impractically difficult to keep things easy to look through.

Lol that's probably right , people spend more time buying games on steam and  talking on forums about the games they bought than actually playing games
