Most bass synths sound really cool on low notes, then sound terrible when you play higher notes with them, and similarly, most leads only sound good in mid range notes.

I'm wondering if there's a way in Ableton to have multiple instruments grouped together, playing off one midi clip of notes, which fade in or out depending on their note range? Essentially this would be an uber instrument that sounds good at any pitch

Hey there,

The good thing about Ableton Live is that pretty much everything is customizable sound-wise.

Read up on Instrument Racks: You can assign different instruments and effects to chains and define which instrument is played at what pitch in the "Key" tab or even which velocity value triggers which chain in the "Vel" tab.

In addition, many synths have the option to apply more or less of filter and volume envelopes depending on the pitch though, e.g. the "Key" parameter in Live's Operator.

Play around with those features and you're bound to come up with neat sounds that adjust to the pitch they're played in.

Cheers,
Moritz
