That's typically the cause of the highest traffic spike for anything that that has happened to.

I believe Reddit and Minecraft came together to create a traffic perfect storm.

They all start here. Notch, Edmund, Fish, Yu, and plenty of others. But they all move on once they hit indie elite status.

Yeah, that's something I've seen with Phil. It's like when you stop being a child and you become an adult.

Yu But they all move on
Considering Derek is the site admin, I don't think he's moved on.

He's still around; we just don't get competitions any more.

notch also used to come into irc regularly (which is how i wound up naming minecraft), but yeah when an indie hits success they tend not to post as much (if at all). i don't really blame them but at the same time i think the people here could learn so much from those indies if they stay and gave advice and feedback. it's like, imagine if you are making a game, and notch, fish, yu, edmund, etc., all played your game and gave you feedback about how to make it better. or even just one or two of them. that'd make some random dude making amatuer games so happy. and more importantly, teach them a lot. so it's a pity it doesn't happen

But if an indie elite was to post regularly on a forum, their big fanbase would create pointless accounts just to have a chance to talk to the guys.

that isn't really different from twitter (which most of them use) -- lots of people make accounts just to message them on twitter

This forum also doesn't really welcome them back with open arms, many people have been openly harsh/angry about all of those people after their success. This forum went from a very positive place to very negative. Admittedly criticism is better than high fives, but this forum is so bitter way too often (which is encouraged by most mods/high posters).

The General subforum doesn't seem very safe to me.

i've never seen anyone say anything negative about edmund, notch, etc. on these forums. fish yes, but i don't remember a single anti-edmund thread or anti-notch thread

Whenever Notch (or someone with that nick) is in IRC, as if by magic we're flooded by stalky Minecraft fans within minutes. So yeah, it might be a good thing the "stars" don't stick around.
If there weren't such stupidly strong focus on the devs of indie games we wouldn't have this problem.
