What:
Odd and Useless is an action packed cooperative multiplayer metroidvania. The gameplay focuses on messy and bloody fights mixed with exploration, basic leveling and crafting.

The game resolves around guys like this,


who use tools like this,


to beat the crap out of this,


and in the end it should look like this (mockups).









Who:
Nicolas (me). Professional programmer in the medical industry.
Team leader and programmer.

Romain. Art student.

Jean-Claude. Professional game designer.



Where:
PC only. Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
The game is entirely developed on Linux and regularly ported to Windows. Mac port hasn't started yet and probably won't until all the features are implemented.

We plan to distribute the game as a pay what you want or maybe a donationware.



How:
The game is coded in C++ using the following libraries:
* Ogre 3D (rendering)
* Bullet (physics)
* SFML (sound)
* OIS (input)
* MyGUI (in game user interface)
* Qt (out of game user interface)
* Lua (scripting)
* MiniUPnP (network configuration)
* Pugi XML (xml parsing)
* Boost (everything)

We're developing it entirely on our free time, sacrificing our evenings, week-ends, vacations and social life. It's totally worth it Smiley



When:
When it's done.
Currently we have a home made engine, an in game level editor and a working, but yet incomplete, prototype.

Even though the game is focused on multiplayer we plan to release a single player version first. Then a single system multiplayer, and eventually a networked multiplayer release.

Looks like a good start! I like the color scheme, and the style and shape of the characters looks cool/fun. The scarf is an interesting touch. Do the weapon colors have a particular meaning?

Any plans for physics or puzzles, or mainly ripping through enemies?

Out of curiosity, what sort of medical software do you work on? I have some interest in that area as well.

Weapon color will change depending on the bonus effect it has (stun, poison...).

Ripping  Evil
There's no newtonian physic in the game, it's all kinematic. I use Bullet only for collision detection and handle the rest myself. I've always hated newtonian physic in 2D platform games, it gives me the feeling of not fully controlling my character.

The design looks really good, I can't wait to see these guys in action. Also, the bosses look like a bunch of odd dudes. I hope they will have some background or something. Good luck with this  ambitious project, French fellas.

Looks visually appealing and consistent. I definitely like the combination of the black and color in the silhouettes. There have already been quite a few games that have used the silhouette art style in recent years, but this is a fresher take on its use.

We're working harder than ever on it.

We have recruited a scenarist and a second developer and we're getting close to get a playable prototype. We're not posting update because we don't have anything new and exciting to show for the moment. I don't think there will be any before we get a beta. That won't be anytime soon, we still have much to do.
