What's everyone's thoughts on http://www.reactos.org/en/index.html? Do you think it has enough support/developers to actually be able to compete with Microsoft Windows? Would you use it if it is ever completed? Discuss  Grin.

No, they do not have the resources to compete with Microsoft Windows, at least the current version.

They have a chicken and egg problem. They would need corporate backing, i.e. fortune 500 customers, to get anywhere in competing with Windows. The IT departments in those companies aren't going to seriously consider adopting it unless it is being seriously developed with a solid team and has a solid customer support story behind it. To do both of those requires either a lot of money to put food on the table for a lot of really smart people who all have plenty of employment options or a really dedicated group of open source hackers who just *love* Windows.

Also, they have to take extra precautions to ensure that they are "clean room" reverse engineering, i.e. not just copy/pasting the disassembled Windows binaries, so that excludes a pretty big chunk of the pool of folks with deep experience with the Windows OS, and the ones that are left are probably going to be receiving e-mails from Microsoft recruiting sooner or later.

So, tl;dr - barring a shift in the proverbial winds, their chances of success are pretty much slim to none.

That's my major fear. They want to make an OS like windows, that looks like windows and with the ability to run all your windows software. Well, I guess to make that without copying windows is... kind of hard.

ReactOS has existed for years, where have you been?

And no, it's useless and is still as useless as ever. It's just a rebundled version of Wine. You could just run some flavor of Unix (or Linux) and use Wine instead for the same result.

Yea, with Wine you can run "legacy" Windows programs without having to put up with the full-time shit of Windows. This is a stupid idea and is regressive rather than progressive.
