I was asked recently to name the three celebrities I respect most (would most like to meet). I couldn't give an immediate answer, but after thinking about it, I now have a list:

1) David Attenborough - BBC Naturalist
2) Stephen Fry - Actor, comedian, writer, etc.
3) Anderson Cooper - CNN news anchor

The common thread would have to be "intelligent, gentle and humble"
So, how about you? Who do you like and why?

1) Amy Winehouse
2) Justin Beiber
3) Bill O'Rielly

Because everyone hates them.

@charybdis - you didn't answer the 'why' part of your own question so i don't feel obligated to either, haha

1. penn jillette
2. peter s. beagle
3. chris crawford

honorable mentions: hans rosling, daniel dennett, marvin minsky, stefan molyneux, ron paul, bill gates, alan kay, howard bloom, noam chomsky, peter thiel, jimmy wales, cenk uygur, aubrey de grey

this really depends on what counts as a "celebrity" though. what level of fame is required?

also. previously this list would have included christopher hitchens as my #1, but he recently died, and i think this list is for living celebrities only? so i had to go with the second-best known-for-being-an-atheist in the world instead

1) Stan Sakai (Creator of "Usagi Yojimbo")
He sticks to his guns and creates great stories without resorting to cheesy gimmicks or giving into to trends. I've always respected his work.

2) Reggie Watts (Musician & Comedian)
He is equally as adept at comedy as he is at music and the fact that he creates most of his act on the spot looping layers of his voice and instruments is amazing.

3) Matt Howden (Musician)
I like him for similar reason that I do Reggie Watts. His stuff is a lot more serious than Reggie's but he creates most of his songs similarly (using a loop pedal and his violin and whatnot).

Bill Hicks - Challenged peoples' perceptions of reality and social conventions unapologetically. Could be rough & unorthodox but had a heart of gold. In my opinion, he was spot-on about everything, but I don't expect most people to get his message.

There's just too many inspirational figures to list, and I can't just choose 3. Most of them aren't even "celebrities" ... IMO, the definition of a celebrity is a socialite, actor, comedian, or athlete... Most of the people I respect are musicians, artists, and so on.

The 'why' was the part about my 3 being "intelligent, gentle and humble". And I would also put Penn Jillette on my list for the same reason if I am allowed more than 3  Wink

2 of my best friends are always talking about Bill Hicks. I've really gotta check him out already.

As for celebrities. I like musicians who have managed to do sort of carve themselves a small independent area to work in. Trent Reznor and Bjork come to mind but there's tons.

I don't respect any celebrity because they are a celebrity, I respect them for what they are doing. Big difference Smiley

I can respect/admire/feel something for people who aren't celebrities so it isn't any different for me to respect/admire/feel something for people who are. The fact that they are celebrities has nothing to do with it, if I respect their work and find interest in their opinions that is reason enough to have a degree of admiration for them.
