Hey folks, I'll be finishing up my PhD and going back to SF - what are the cool and hip game jams/meetups people go to? I'm mostly interested in learning more about game design and meeting other devs for possible collaborations. I'll be working at UWE, but I'll continue doing my own stuff on the side as well.

Cheers, and looking forward to meeting folks!

If you can make it down to SJ we have jams at the Hacker Dojo on a somewhat regular basis (tomorrow in fact!). There have been jams up in SF at Noisebridge but I don't think there's been one in a while. The MADE in Oakland has been hosting some gamedev things as well lately.

There is also a Facebook group called Bay Area Game Jammers where you can keep tabs on what's going on around town.

There's tons of game development and indie groups and events in San Jose and San Francisco.  You should check out http://www.meetup.com/

Sadly, there's practically nothing like that here in Fresno. That's why I'm looking for a game development job out there, where all the action is. So far it's been super tough but I'll be joining you out there once I find one.

Since you mentioned potential collabs, are you experienced with Unity at all?

Yes indeedy - it's my primary game dev platform right now (most games on my website are in unity). I'm primarily a coder, but I wanna learn more about design, and I do music sporadically when inspiration hits. How 'bout you?

I do the art, design, and programming on my games, but I'm a noob programmer. Almost everything I know about coding comes from working in Unity. I've got much more experience in the art and design side from working in the industry, so I'd love to hook up with someone more technically minded so I can focus on what I'm best at (not to mention produce games quicker). I prefer working with people in my general geographic vicinity, since it makes communication and periodic co-working much easier.

Hit me up if you want to discuss working together on something. I have several gameplay prototypes that I make when I need a distraction from my primary project Dungeon Hearts, if any of them seem interesting to you we could give it a go.

Awesome - sounds like we may be a good fit together. Your 7DFPS entry looks pretty neat - I'll check it out when I get a chance.

I'll PM you with contact info.

I live out here too!  Between SF, southbay and Oakland there are quite a few people in the area.  I mostly find out of events through TIG, but I have noticed that there is a lot of other stuff that happens around here.  Lots of mixers for professionals and developers happen in the area, so if you keep your eyes peeled you'll find plenty of opportunities to meet people.
