If you want more 'energy', work on a healthy lifestyle. Meet all your nutritional targets with whole foods, stay away from refined foods, and exercise moderately.

i've never actually tried an energy drink so i've no idea if they're healthy or not but my guess would be that they are composed similar to soda, right? just more caffeine? so it stands to reason that because soda is bad for you energy drinks would also be bad for you (but probably not much worse for you than soda is, which is already really really bad)
i was actually expecting you to lace up an abstract from a paper you googled about caffeine in 2009 or whatever, not energy drinks in particular. there is no way you dont know things about caffeine and have caffeine anecdotes on hand.

I know someone who drank 4 five-hour-energy's at once for a dollar. A dollar. A single dollar. He ended up getting an erection that lasted for 6 hours or so. He had to call the viagra number for the 4-hour-boner. Not to mention almost having a heart attack.

Same guy dipped his wiener in the pool (back when planking was the thing) in the middle of winter, for 60 seconds, just to get a double cheeseburger from mcdonalds.
Where can I find this guy? I have 20 bucks and this sounds like the most cost effective form of entertainment...

But seriously I can't drink energy drinks, a few sips and they make me feel nauseous.

Come on people, stop throwing baseless claims around. Energy drinks are perfectly fine as long as you don't drink a lot of them and keep the rest of your diet in check, and the aspartame = cancer bullshit was disproved ages ago. It tastes like it will give you cancer, but that's something else entirely.

Here's Wikipedia on the health effects of soft drinks. Basically, most of the supposed health effects are just correlation; the people with the unhealthiest diets also drink the most soft drinks, and vice versa. Soft drinks do contribute to weight gain, but again, most of it is because people don't compensate for the extra calories as they would do when eating something calorie-heavy; the weight gain effects not caused by stupidity are negligible.

The only significant issues that ARE caused by soft drinks, as I pointed out before, are the tooth decay issues. If you drink too much without a straw or rinsing with water it will harm your teeth.

In excess, yes.

Any energy product is. I took a lot of caffeine tablets when I was younger and got a twitch for a very long time.

It's relative. Energy drinks are "perfectly fine" much the same way a plate of fries and a soda is "perfectly fine". Only if consumption is sparse are the long-term effects not terribly significant. People like to throw the term 'moderation' around without any thought as to what that might imply - it's not necessarily the same for all goods. We all have our vices - I like to indulge at times, but I'm not going to pretend it's ever healthy to have a bag of chips or a cigar. "Perfectly fine" just means you find it tolerable. Not everyone does, and that isn't just splitting hairs. Sometimes pleasure has a price.

Anyway, there are alternatives to energy drinks that actually benefit your health and provide sufficient caffeine content (e.g. black/green tea). If you're consuming these every day just for caffeine, I'd make the switch.

For years I used to drink about half a litre of energy drink almost every day, I didn't really notice any negative effects, but I gave up on them a year or 2 ago because I always just assumed it would kill me if I kept going. I don't want diabetes or anything, and I also didn't like the dependency I had developed, going without energy drinks for a while would give me massive headaches and sap me of any natural energy.

I would suggest to other people not to have them as frequently as I did, just keep them for special occasions when you "need" them. (they keep their effectiveness that way too)

No, by 'perfectly fine' I mean 'perfectly fine' and by 'in check' I mean actually 'in check'. You can drink the stuff daily (just like you can eat fries daily, actually) as long as you adjust the rest of your diet to balance it out. If you exercise enough, eat stuff to get all the proper vitamins and stuff and don't snack outside of meals, you could even eat the most "unhealthy" McDonald's menu daily without it affecting your health.

There's no such thing as "unhealthy food". We just call certain foods unhealthy because they don't fit into the diet of 99% of the people eating them.

(Naturally, this is not taking into account overdose of any ingredient, but to seriously overdose on most food and non-alcoholic drinks requires a suicidal kind of effort.)
