And I'd argue the dumbing down matters just as much to the PC version. Because average PC games sell better than good ones. Because people don't recognize and appreciate high quality within a genre they aren't really into and don't really get.

That is possibly the most indie thing I have ever heard.

Also, I would be willing to accept that it is Bethesda's fault for turning a good RPG into an average FPS-style game. I seriously doubt that it's the console's fault for Fallout 3 looking like an FPS, though.

Morrowind had a nice balance of roleplaying and action, I wish they could at least do it like that.

Btw, how was the level scaling system in Morrowind anyways? I know there was level scaling, but it wasn't as batshitcrazy as Oblivion.

I figured it more of a common sense to the point of being a dick about it sort of thing. It's pretty obvious that my mother's opinion on the different versions of Street Fighter II isn't worth a whole lot, while the opinion of someone who can tell one version from another is worth a bit more. I guess it's in general less fun to acknowledge that when the same principle devalues (relatively or whatever) your own opinion on something you actually care about, and so it becomes an elitist thing Smiley

I don't really know. I've tried googling for it a couple of times but it's hard to come across something that's not actually about Oblivion. At the time I started playing it it wasn't something I was aware of and it wasn't so obvious that I noticed it. But yeah, I know it's there, somewhere. Morrowind's regular levelling system is every bit as broken as Oblivion's though Tongue It is very strange to use the worst one of your weapons in order to level up faster.

I think the regular levelling system is what made the level scaling in Oblivion bad enough so that a lot of people who didn't have strong opinions on it to begin with also started to properly dislike it. Because you could easily level up without getting much better at killing things it. So them ragged ruffians turn into space marine ninjas because you've gotten quite good at bartering and picking locks. If you didn't know about it from the beginning the world could very well level away and leave you behind.

For the record, I don't actually hate Morrowind or Oblivion.

It really is Bethesda's fault. Before them, Fallout 3 would've been Van Buren.

Was video this put together by NMA or Black Isle?

Either way, I think NMA's acting a little hypocritically. The video is all shooting and burning people and gatling gun action. Now they see the F3 videos (which are also all shooting and burning) and they actually bitch about F3 being action-oriented?

Van Buren in the video, if you ask me, looks pretty much like Take No Prisoners or some other top-down shooter. But it isn't. It's Van Buren.

So what does that prove? You shouldn't take some short amount of footage and bitch about the whole game (which you never played but only have seen in the said footage) in a million threads.

You must be missing the part where F3 has FPS controls, and VB is still point-and-click.  Though it appears that VB was making a jump from turn-based to real-time.

There's nothing in the VB video that tells me it's an action game.  And Fallout 1 and 2 had flamethrowers and gatling guns so I don't really see your point there.

My point is that, upon seeing the Van Buren video, and having no knowledge about the overall project beforehand, one might assume, that it's Diablo-with-guns (!?). Because the video doesn't really show us anything more than that. The PC was made, then he stabbed someone, wore some armor, burned some people, did some talking, had some gatling gun action, and opened a vault.

Now, let's check the Bethesda's footage. The PC is made, opens the vault, does some talking, kills someone, punches someone else, blows up some radscorpions, talks some more, kills some more. Same stuff, different order.

Now, we have no knowledge about the overall project because, well, we didn't play it yet. We just see the video and we call it Oblivion-with-guns.

Had the Bethesda's game been isometric, with all the video content the same, we all would be drooling all over the game.

So, that's my point.

Your avatar tells me you might have some Van cat blood in you, so I'll tell you as soon as it arrives and I get a good idea Smiley.

Though it appears that VB was making a jump from turn-based to real-time.
According to internets, it had some kind of sort of real-time ish (action points recharging over time something something) thing going on, although proper turn-based was intended to be an option by the time the game was done. Don't like the idea of that an awful lot. But hey.

Also, Fallout 1/2 were pretty awesome with combat centric characters. It is also very awesome to pretend that it's the future and that you're having a conversation with someone, but mostly I just killed human beings with shotguns. Just saying. I do think that it matters whether or not the only solution to everything is to kill everything, but I don't think it's really fundamental whether or not you can get through everything without ever getting into a fight. Like, it matters a whole lot more whether those non-combat options are interesting ways to play the game or not.

I thought FALLOUT: BROTHERHOOD OF STEEL was pretty good. It may not have been canon and stuff, but it did have a giant radioactive turtle, which has to count for something.

That's the meanest thing ever:) God I hate that game

Necromancy.

FALLOUT'S COMING BACK HOME, BABY!

Quote from:  Kotaku
Fallout New Vegas was announced moments ago during a Bethesda press conference in London.

The new game was revealed by Bethesda's Pete Hines who said that the publisher is working with Obsidian Entertainment on the title.

It will be coming out next year for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Obsidian, as you know, is found by the most of Black Isle.

A joint project? Sounds exciting!  Grin

Also, I'd been meaning to revive this thread anyway, since I've been playing Fallout 3 lately.

The bottom line for me: any shortcomings in this game are made up for by the fat boy.
