Serious decision time! Hood or 'fro for the new monk?

Definitely the fro, the other guy looks like a cultist. I don't get the white detail on his neck though, almost looks like a priest collar.

It is a priest colar. He's a clergyman after all.

Ah, didn't recognize the symbol on his belt as a Christian symbol which gave me more of an oriental vibe. The martial art stance and all. The collar would probably be more recognizable if the shirt wasn't unbuttoned though, but maybe it's just me who find the design a tiny bit confusing.

You know, it's a fantasy game, so sometimes it's fun to play around with stereotypes and have a kung-fu totting priest with a 'fro instead of the usual bald Buddhist monk.

First full screenshot in the new style, with all three core heroes in: I think the re-work was worth it.

hi tee gee
played the demo. this game is cute but all the lerping takes way too long. when i click on a treasure chest it takes like 3-4 seconds to actually get into my inventory. the same for unit commands/motions. from the newer gifs it looks like you've increased the speed? so hopefully that's fixed.

Speed on new gifs is the pretty much the same as it always was, but a few other people had similar feedback and when they sent me YT videos/gifs it seemed like their game just locks at 30fps instead of 60 for some reason. Do you have something like Fraps to test if it's the case?

Damn, you're the guy who made Magi? That's a great game man, played the shit out of it 6 or more years ago. I've been very hyped for ArchMagi ever since, until the progress kinda stopped and I forgot about it. Now I see you're working on this game, which looks pretty nice, but I've also seen two completely different games, Cinders and Solstice. Not my kind of games at all and really not something I'd ever imagine seeing from the guy who made the awesome mage dueling game. So dude, where's ArchMagi? Btw, I'm really having a craving for Magi again and I've bought Magi about 6 years ago, but there doesn't seem to be any way of reclaiming the download link through an account or email. Or is there?

Fire me an email (tom at moacube.com) and I'll think of something regarding the download link. ArcMagi's on hold. Likely dead. Lurk (the artist) couldn't do it full-time, and I couldn't keep making my games at hobbyist pace or I'd starve. Sorry I don't have better news here. But honestly, the design didn't age that well. I think Bonfire is a much better game overall. Dunno what's weird about Solstice and Cinders, though. I like different kind of experiences, like most people. Mechanic-centric strategy games are fun, but so is storytelling.

Just tried Bonfire and it's pretty damn fun so far. Good to see a tactical game again. Definitely gonna keep checking your progress. Don't see why the design of Magi didn't age well though. It's something interesting and unique, unlike every other cliche genre currently on the indie market. The addition of PvP in such a game would be huge. Just Magi with PvP and improvements, but with no new unnecessary (but nice) art, would be great as well. Sent you the email too btw

Glad you find it fun. I'm quite happy with the core gameplay but it still needs a lot of work in other aspects . Don't see why the design of Magi didn't age well though. It's something interesting and unique, unlike every other cliche genre currently on the indie market. Don't get me wrong -- I still like Magi in all its awkward glory and play it every now and then to this day. I think the overall idea was pretty good and definitely rather unique. But I was also a very amateur designer back then. While the dueling mages setting still stands out, the low-level design (interface, progression, learning curve) sucks and would have to be updated heavily for modern standards. Aaaaanyways... Some new monstahs!

The new troll is pretty badass: Also, working on encounter variety. Some crazy ones (like fighting undead version of your party from the last failed run) included.

Still needs a bit more work, but I guess the basic timing is there.

So what makes it a tactical rpg and not just an rpg?

It's all focused on combat and tactics rather than role-playing. There's no exploration, towns, quests, dialogues, etc. It's just your party build/strategy, and a stream of super-difficult battles to test them. You can check the old prototype demo. It's not as pretty as the recent screenshots, but showcases the core gameplay well enough.
