I picked up Bastion based on the fact that I could not find any bad reviews. I loved the aesthetics and presentation as much as everyone else. Eventually, I got further into the game, and now I am at the point where I'm used to the presentation, so what is left is the gameplay and story. Maybe it is the comparatively intense stimulation of action/fighting games, but Bastion's gameplay does not seem to give me much of a kick.

I suspect this might manifest in players of other multiplayer games. Is it just me, or do Dota players find it hard to play other games, for example?

Mostly, I'm wondering out loud. Anyone else ever had the same feeling?

Sometimes I get hooked on Dwarf Fortress for a while because I stop being able to handle playing anything with a less detailed simulation.

I can relate to this a lot. I've been playing LoL way too much over the past two years and new games I don't give me as much of a kick/adrenaline, no matter how much I find them brilliant. As a result, I have a hard time sticking to a game instead of going back to LoL. Those MOBA games are too rewarding :x

It's quite interesting, because I have never found the appeal to MOBAs and I have been playing them for some time already.

Anyway, in the case of bastion, there are ways to pump up the difficulty once you begin unlocking god altars.

In general, if you are looking for adrenaline pumps, well, you ought to try more actiony games. You nee a different mindset for anything else. Try something that burns your brain, like spacechem.

I've been playing a lot of Awesomenauts, but other MOBA's and the attitudes of their players have me too intimidated to play something like LoL. I do have a hard time playing more laid back games because I'm slightly addicted to the adrenaline I release when I hear the killing spree music.

I used to get like this with Dwarf Fortress too, but that's more like getting absorbed in a really good book. DF has actually been too difficult to get into lately due to lack of time.

I can relate to the LoL issue. Thankfully the string of terrible patches and changes over the last year broke me free of LoL.

I still play DOTA2 but I'm able to go back to other types of games now.

On of the biggest things crossing my mind when I would sit down was "Well I could start a new 40 hour game I probably wont have time to finish or I could play a full game of LoL in 45 mins and not feel bad for walking away without completing the game". Of course those games of LoL add up and  makes the argument moot. I remember feeling particularly bad after playing like 4 games of LoL in a row when I could have played something else.

It's funny I usually get some sort of rewarding feeling from playing most games but MOBA games I walk away feeling guilty that I've wasted my time.

Have you experienced this with other games? Because otherwise I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Bastion's gameplay is simply repetitive and dull as shit once you get used to the rest.

I didn't find a higher threshold of stimulation or anything, but a good deal of platformers and otherwise straightforward games seem boring to me now. Actually, most games on the whole don't do much for me anymore. The worst case has to be rpgs, I have little patience left for that kind of dullness.

Twitchy puzzle games are a great transitional in-betweener. Bejeweled Blitz, Puzzle Fighter II, and Mr. Driller are just a few good examples. Somedays you'll feel like a nut, and some days you won't.

Kinda not seeing too much of the point in MOBA games, too. If I'm going online multiplayer, I'm playing something more like Spiral Knights or Dark Souls.

Whoa, thanks for the great replies, guys. I'm quite astounded at how much I can relate to everything stated.

I have unlocked god altars, and I have tried increasing the difficulty. I expected the challenge to help, but Bastion being more of an RPG than an action game seemed to mean that my skill with weapons and movement did not feel as much of a factor as raw power. Not sure if that is true, but it felt that way to me.

I had similar feelings with Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. It was much more RPG than action, compared to something like Kingdom Hearts.

What comes to mind is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Not sure what's going on here, since the game is supposed to be a classic. Maybe short bursts of an exploration-heavy game does not quite work?

Ahaha, I wouldn't rule that out either.

I felt some of this some years ago trying to play Xenosaga. Might have to do with less free time.

In any case, since I forked out cash for Bastion, it is supposed to be short and I'm close to the supposedly good ending, I'll finish off the last few hours and move on. Maybe I'll just play Street Fighter the rest of my life and pointedly ignore all the Steam sales and indie bundles, heh.

I feel the opposite way about a lot of games. I don't like FPS or action games for the most part because they're too fast or too "intense" as you put it. I try playing something like Team Fortress 2 and it just bewilders me that people find it enjoyable when you can get killed and respawn five times every minute.

I don't think Dota 2 is an "intense" game relatively speaking. It's very much about strategy, making the right long-term decisions like hero picks/bans or item builds and such. If you compare it to Awesomenauts for example, that game is a lot more twitchy and about being as fast as possible rather than having the best strategy. Dota has a slower pace, and that's why I love it.

One of my favorite genres has always been adventure games, and I favor the kind of adventure games that features lots and lots of reading. So more sedate pacing and a focus on story has always been my preference. I never have trouble going back to that.

For me, games with more intense stimulation are the challenge. I remember being a little overloaded after playing Halo 3 for a few hours.
