So, I've recently gotten hooked on Dwarf Fortress again (after being free of its influence for a few months.  Curses!).  Thing is, there's a specific kind of fortress I've never been able to try out.  A Bloodline game!  Otherwise known as a succession game.  So I would like to propose that we start up a succession game!  Or another one, at any rate.  The rules are pretty standard.

  • One turn lasts from Spring of one year to Spring of the next.
  • Upon taking over, you must name one of the dwarves after yourself.  Your writings should be in the POV of either the overlord or the dwarf you chose.  Doesn't matter which.
  • Updates can be however long you want them to be.
  • In the event that you can't finish your turn, the game will revert to the last fully played turn.

Some unofficial suggestions:

  • Try an improve upon the design of the fortress during your turn.  Streamline things, get bedrooms, make things more efficient, etc.
  • If things aren't interesting, make them interesting!  And I don't mean actively sabotage the fortress.
  • Post your yearly results so people can see the overall progress!

To exchange fortresses, save it and exit, zip up the save folder of that particularly world, and post it online.

Above all, this is designed to be fun.  Feel free to sign up for your turn at any time.  I'll keep track of who has signed up in this post, and we'll start the game once enough people have signed up!

For those who don't know what Dwarf Fortress is, it's a realistic (as realistic as a fantasy game can be) RTS/RPG with an incredible amount of complexity and depth.  The regular mode is all about building up a fortress of dwarves to the height of dwarven culture and economy.  You can check out more about the game on the Bay 12 Games site and the DF Wiki.  I might write a base guide for it in this post if people have more questions.

By the way, the version I am using is this one.  I'm a pansy and need sprites.  Harr.

Above all, remember the Dwarf Fortress motto: Losing is fun!

Turns:
1.) Dragonmaw
2.) Massena
3.) MedO
4.) GeneralValter
5.)
6.)
7.)
8.)
9.)

Fortresses that fail are much more exciting than ones that succeed!  Just look at Boatmurdered.

Let's do this! I didn't play the game all that much and never got to the later stages (economy etc) before stopping to play again, so maybe I'd best take one of the early turns. Unless you want seasoned Fortress builders only, of course.

Edit: Doesn't look like it. Yay!

No clue.  I didn't really pay attention to anything beyond the competition forums, as I chill out in TIGIRC.

Sorry, last one stopped on me. Cry
My FPS was around 6 and I only made it through one season.

(It was pretty cool when someone made a artifact warhammer with a picture of an artifact spear on it. Weapons with pictures of weapons on them ARE STRONGER!)

I could still send it along and upload what pics I have, actually. <3

In my personal fortress right now, all my dwarves engrave are pictures of a dwarf and dwarves.  The dwarf is surrounded by the dwarves.

Speaking of which, I should download Dwarf Fortress again. I stopped playing just before the massive upgrade for the first stage of the army arc. I'm totally ready to get back into it, though.

The new history stuff is pretty rad, but I'm still itching for the ability to send my dwarves out to go fight other civilizations.

Diary of Dragonmaw, First-term Foreman and miner of Boulderchannels

Entry 1

We've arrived at the future location of our very own bustling fortress.  We couldn't be at a better place even if I had picked it.  I have a nose for valuable minerals and ores y'know.  It's part of the miner skill repertoire.  And I am a damn good miner.  In fact, it's the only thing I do.

Entry 2

This is the same day as my previous entry, but I just have to note that whoever was in charge of sending dwarves collected the worst ragtag bunch of losers I have ever seen.  I'm the only miner, and the only person who has any skill in their job more than a hobby.  Not only that, I'm the only one working.  Babin, this is going to be such a pain in the ass.

Entry 3

I've decided to start a vast campaign of deforestation, starting off with the trees right outside our entry hallway.  Fuck the elves.  I don't care if they'll get pissed at me.  They're a bunch of pansies.  True men chop down trees and turn them into useful things, like beds or houses.  If they complain, I'll just put my pick through their dainty little skulls.

Speaking of wood, we've begun to dig out the workshop area.  And by we, I mean me.  Bunch of useless assholes just sit around all day and never help.  "We need to work underground to make our true works of art!".  Whatever.  I'm just too dwarf enough for them.

Entry 4

I've struck some gems!  I was digging out our barracks (so these layabouts can stop complaining about sleeping on the ground) when I ran across a brilliant red gem.  Excellent!  We can put our gem cutter to work as soon as the workshop is done!

Entry 5

Yesterday, I struck a gem.  Today, the woodcutter decides to mine as well.  What a cockbag.  He says he wants to alleviate the strain of work I am doing, but I know my dwarven shoulders are wide enough to bear the strain.  He just wants the gems for himself.  Oh well, not much I can do.  At least we'll get more dug out faster.

Speaking of valuables, we have run into a smorgasboard of good minerals.  This ranges from the lackluster saltpeter to the much more valuable bauxite and magnetite.  Iron and magma-proof objects, here we come!  I knew I had a good feeling about the value of the ores in this fortress.

Entry 6

The gem deposit I found?  yeah, the idiot who decided to "help" destroyed it.  He was trying to mine it in a fit of greed, but all he did was smash apart the gems.  I managed to find a single gem he excavated alright, alongside my own gem.  What an idiot.

On the bright side, the barracks is finished, if filled with the odd stone here and there.  Finally, a bed to sleep in.

Entry 7

We now have a trade depot!  This is good because it is also now early summer.  Has it really been a whole season?  Wow.  I guess the tactic of mining to ignore these fuckers has worked.  Best get back to it!

On top of the trade depot, we have also finished the furniture workshops (the mechanic, masonry, and carpentry stockpiles) and have started on the crafts workshops.  Need something to trade, after all.

The kitchen is coming next.  We have enough food and drink to last us until winter, but I've already started planning out a farm and kitchen, as well as making that worthless fisherman that wanders around all day in his dumbass galoshes work.  Sometimes he even falls asleep while fishing!  I hope he drowns.

I've also decided to myself that we are going to dig down quite a ways to get away from all this noise.  The bedrooms level is going to be at least 4 levels down from the workshops, if not more.  I need my sleep.  Can't be the savior of a whole fortress by yourself!
