Diary of Dragonmaw, First-term Foreman and miner of Boulderchannels
Entry 1We've arrived at the future location of our very own bustling fortress. We couldn't be at a better place even if I had picked it. I have a nose for valuable minerals and ores y'know. It's part of the miner skill repertoire. And I am a damn good miner. In fact, it's the only thing I do.
Entry 2This is the same day as my previous entry, but I just have to note that whoever was in charge of sending dwarves collected the worst ragtag bunch of losers I have ever seen. I'm the only miner, and the only person who has any skill in their job more than a hobby. Not only that, I'm the only one working. Babin, this is going to be such a pain in the ass.
Entry 3I've decided to start a vast campaign of deforestation, starting off with the trees right outside our entry hallway. Fuck the elves. I don't care if they'll get pissed at me. They're a bunch of pansies. True men chop down trees and turn them into useful things, like beds or houses. If they complain, I'll just put my pick through their dainty little skulls.
Speaking of wood, we've begun to dig out the workshop area. And by we, I mean me. Bunch of useless assholes just sit around all day and never help. "We need to work underground to make our true works of art!". Whatever. I'm just too dwarf enough for them.
Entry 4I've struck some gems! I was digging out our barracks (so these layabouts can stop complaining about sleeping on the ground) when I ran across a brilliant red gem. Excellent! We can put our gem cutter to work as soon as the workshop is done!
Entry 5Yesterday, I struck a gem. Today, the woodcutter decides to mine as well. What a cockbag. He says he wants to alleviate the strain of work I am doing, but I know my dwarven shoulders are wide enough to bear the strain. He just wants the gems for himself. Oh well, not much I can do. At least we'll get more dug out faster.
Speaking of valuables, we have run into a smorgasboard of good minerals. This ranges from the lackluster saltpeter to the much more valuable bauxite and magnetite. Iron and magma-proof objects, here we come! I knew I had a good feeling about the value of the ores in this fortress.
Entry 6The gem deposit I found? yeah, the idiot who decided to "help" destroyed it. He was trying to mine it in a fit of greed, but all he did was smash apart the gems. I managed to find a single gem he excavated alright, alongside my own gem. What an idiot.
On the bright side, the barracks is finished, if filled with the odd stone here and there. Finally, a bed to sleep in.
Entry 7We now have a trade depot! This is good because it is also now early summer. Has it really been a whole season? Wow. I guess the tactic of mining to ignore these fuckers has worked. Best get back to it!
On top of the trade depot, we have also finished the furniture workshops (the mechanic, masonry, and carpentry stockpiles) and have started on the crafts workshops. Need something to trade, after all.
The kitchen is coming next. We have enough food and drink to last us until winter, but I've already started planning out a farm and kitchen, as well as making that worthless fisherman that wanders around all day in his dumbass galoshes work. Sometimes he even falls asleep while fishing! I hope he drowns.
I've also decided to myself that we are going to dig down quite a ways to get away from all this noise. The bedrooms level is going to be at least 4 levels down from the workshops, if not more. I need my sleep. Can't be the savior of a whole fortress by yourself!
