First, the Law:
-I (the host) will provide a theme for the challenge.
-You will be given TWO WEEKs to compose one song with said theme.
-The song must be a new track made for this challenge.
-You will post your song HERE, in the official challenge thread.
-Other participants will listen to your song. You will listen to other participants' songs. Critique will be had.
-A winner will be chosen by the host.
-The winner will host the next challenge.

Well, everyone, I guess it's time to start the 14th contest. For this one, given what "dark" holiday is at the end of this month, combined with the rumors regarding this year marking the end of the world, the theme for this contest will be:

Lose game

This is another open-ended one. Whatever kind of game is lost is open to interpretation. Just as long as there is a sense of defeat, any music will be accepted. While not required, it is preferred that submissions be between 20 seconds and five minutes.

All pieces must be submitted by October 18th 11:59 PM EST. Possibly an extra day, but then, in my time zone, the next day starts in an hour. XD

20-Seconds? Aww, man. As soon as I seen "Lose Game", Super Mario Bros. and it's "do doo do do dododoooo" sprung to mind.

Super fun challenge though!

Don't let Charlie Sheen take part.

HELLO!

I saw the challenge and this is what I came up with. I was trying to go for the "you lost the game and now all your friends and family are dead" kind of feel. I turned down the bit depth a little to make it seem like it was being played from some kind of vintage device. I sort of see this as the game over music for a genre that is hyphenated with -horror.

Really excited to see what you think, and other people's entries.

@rofklaw you nailed that vibe you described and that organ has a nice melancholic sound to it, however the distortion is a bit too much for me and sometimes I feel there's a little too much discordance.

I'm not sure if I will be entering this one in all honesty, but I will try to listen to all the entries  Hand Metal Right

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I felt a little iffy on the distortion too. However, the dissonance I think is always going to be a matter of personal taste. Some people like a lot of dissonance some don't. Some people like their coffee black and some take cream and sugar.

@JudahRoydes

I really like the song, after the intro however, all I could imagine is end credits just after a huge climax.

I also listened to your Runners Grinders stuff. Love it, especially the boss theme, love the industrial percussion with quirky instrumentation!

@trurkowski, I see what you mean about the it sounding like the credits are rolling. I kind of feel like that about the you are dead screen though. They may as well be rolling credits while the game is waiting for the player to press start. It is the end, for now your game is over. Your death was brought to you by...

I am glad you liked the RG stuff.

Judah:

This is really good quality. It starts out kind of silly-sounding. (Not in a bad way, just a little whimsical). When it busts into this crunchy guitar sound it is oh-so-satisfying. Additionally I really appreciate the minimalist form. Two distinct sections, the first one just a constant buildup then the second one a killing guitar riff. Very very cool.

Finally had the time to listen to the two pieces submitted so far. XD

I left my comments on SoundCloud, though don't take the criticisms too hard; I enjoyed both overall. Smiley

Hey, I'm new around these parts. This is actually my first post here. Well here is my entry!

I wanted it to sound like a death screen in a zombie game, or a survival horror.

I'm not satisfied with it as it has some obvious flaws, but I don't feel like fiddling around with it anymore either. Oh well.

Consider this my final entry unless I change my mind before the deadline

Welcome! I really like this piece. It has a sort of "peace at last" feeling to it, but with the pitch bends it's still pretty creepy. You have done well, in my opinion!

This is beautiful. The tension builds up perfectly, you nailed the 'game over' feel too! Love the guitar solo.

This makes me a little frantic inside. You achieved exactly what you set out to do, I really do get that "everyone is dead" feeling listening to this. Nice job!
