I think Bob is really painful and pretentious, but after his last video, I must admit I'm genuinely intrigued to try his game. If he made an RPG about making and marketing his game, that would count as the first completely self-referential game ever made. Here in the indie game community, we hold innovation in high esteem, and I'd like to try out a game on this theme (even if it sucks). There are books about writing books, and films about writing films (e.g. 'Adaptation') and even songs about writing songs. But so far, it's not something that has been explored in an interactive format.
I hope in the final chapter of the game, you get to lock yourself in a room with a webcam for 100 days and perform a mock-suicide.
On the other hand, if it turns out that the new video is not a scene from the game but just another way for Bob to whine about Nintendo, I'm not interested.

as far i know the game is about games yes, but i don't think it was focused about bob's game itself before this stuff...

Well, there's a play out there called "Title of Show", which was about a small group of people going through the production process to make a play. So Bob's Game would be the first self-referential game, but the idea certainly has been circulated before.

Wow, I was never interested in this game... and sadly, I'm still not interested in the game... but that video was great! Sure, the execution and direction was a bit immature, not at deep as it could have been, but he said some true things in there. I'm suprised at you guys dissing this. I loathe the word "naive". Why do you have to look down on someone who wants to live his dream? The world is driven by basically fascist corporations and everyone bows down to them to get food on their table. There will be a new world order some day, and this guy is just a bit early. Don't kick someone while they're down.

Yeah, it's not new to other art forms, but in a way self-referentialism is more interesting in games, because of the interactive aspect. The author is putting you in his shoes.

He should rename it as "A Game and his Bob" and resubmit it, maybe some busy Nintendo manager will get confused

Segagaga was a game about making games (quite loosely interpreted). A "Sega Simulator", they called it.

Segagaga was a game about making games (quite loosely interpreted). A "Sega Simulator", they called it.
true! there was an awesome trailer about it :D i've always wondered how the gameplay is It's an amalgamation of other game genres. Most of the time it's a top-down RPG, and you fight random things (mostly developers). You can recruit said developers, and eventually switch to a "make-sure-everyone-is-doing-their-job" gameplay type deal, where you see eight of your recruited developer-monsterss hard at work at their desks, and you're supposed to give them incentives to want to stay and work harder and longer in order to produce better games. Depending on the quality of your game, you'll be shown how much of the marketshare Sega holds after your game gets distributed. Good games are generally real Sega games, whereas bad games are parodies of various games (mostly Sony and Sega- or sometimes not even actual games at all). So basically, most of the time it's an RPG, sometimes switching to a Mini-Game type deal where you are basically "Synthesizing" a new game. If you manage to stay afloat long enough (and also defeat several Sony-like executives), the game will drastically change one last time, but I won't spoil that. But yeah, Segagaga is more a tribute to Sega's worst times than a game about making games. (I.e.- You don't get to choose what games you make, and most of the things in the game are made radically more silly and Sega-referential than anything) ... 48 Pages.

The problem I have with the video is that it's just too cheap and easy to make a fake conversation where you (or the character of you) gets the sympathy of the audience. That conversation never happened. You say you hate the word 'naive,' but what reason do you have to believe that any corporate exec ever used that word to Bob?

By making the 'opponents' look MEAN and HARSH to the little developer, fighting for his game, he is unfairly getting appeal, because that was a really fake and stupid conversation. By amplifying the stereotypes present in people like you, eobet, he is just faking some 'heroism'. He also probably amplified his innocence.
And if that was real, he was being an idiot. "Come on, it's great! EVERYONE WILL LOOOOOOVE IT!"

I'd like to believe that this conversation actually did happen but the Exec was just making fun of Bob. Like, they made a bet that he couldn't tell Bob all these things while constantly keeping a straight face.

I called the video shallow earlier, but I believe you missed the only 'deep' thing about it: I don't think Bob is having a conversation with any exec. He is having a conversation with himself.
