Marriner Dreams

Somber olive clouds clung to the navy blue sky towards the city the windward facing mountains cascaded with condensation a fog like a blanket tossed to conceal the rotting corpse of the new world. The rusted barnacled docks whizzed by, a landmark for what you were convinced would be the peak of sorrow in your meager existence.

You bid farewell to the port shanties and slid deep into the worn teal vinyl of the train car, knowing that when you opened my eyes again it would all have been a cruel dream sent from the messenger himself as a hefty reminder of your short time left here on this flat earth.

Presently you focus your attention on your only luggage, a satchel containing an array of highly personal valuables and necessities.

Upon further inspection, you find:
  • 12 jars and vials
  • forceps
  • a net
  • hemp string and thread
  • your scientific journal
  • a multipurpose tablet
  • quill and ink
  • 3400 standard credits
  • a canteen
  • a cast insect tibia knife

Torn from taking stock of your inventory, you're drawn to a sweet smell lingering throughout the cabin. You turn to see a familiar face conducting the aisles. The recognition dawns upon you and you recall a brief encounter with this same individual that resulted in a stilted relationship years earlier, when you were still a skiff pulling wild mussels in from the roiling waves, and you sought to fill the lonely nights spent freezing in the lowest boarding deck, and the pumping engines filled your ears and kept you awake until the next sun rose. In a bout of frivolity you consider approaching the old acquaintance and attempting to rekindle any lost sentiments, but as to matters of flirtation it has been a long time. You're drawing a blank.
