any game you want, honey

but seriously,
dismissal in red and green to reform game separation compulsion detonation, "Eversion" was ideal in that it presented a good entry to a contest, an interesting new mechanic used in multiple ways, a unique artstyle, and for pulling off the artificial shift from cute to unsettling without seeming cliched and stupid. maybe it was found just from before or after or during a temporary recession in that design being disgustingly quotidian. Eversion wasn't a great game. There are lots of better games. It's not an ideal game. "Eversion" was an ideal game.

Eversion was a good game. It's ideal in its own way, as are other games. What does "ideal" mean?

There are no "ideal" games for me that currently exist, since all of them are created with someone else's ideas in mind. There are great games, even fantastic ones, but not "ideal" ones. Even things I make myself are technically not "ideal", since an ideal game would assume everyone who played it thought the same way I did.

I think a better question would have been, "What kind of game would you make, under current technology, if you had millions of dollars in the bank and an independent studio?"

For me, it would be a game with a detailed but not too detailed cel-shaded anime art style, a long, well-written RPG-length plot, action-RPG gameplay combined with online co-op, and exploration around the world via airship to fight your way through armies and ancient monsters with your own ship crew... but that's probably still not my ideal game, just one that I think would be fun for this day and age.

I don't know if this is my ideal game, or if that even exists, but this video has infected my brain. I've watched it at least 100 times. Everything about it is perfect - the music, the graphics, the atmosphere, the psychedelic visual effect, the state of mind fthhtihf

it really has changed the way my brain works and what I want from games. That song got me really into sine waves and organs. I made a bunch of songs for A Cool @ss Goblet Game that were never used that were heavily influenced by that song, one of which was a complete ripoff.

One day I'm going to make a game that looks like that, even if I'm 80 years old.

Ideal game, eh? Let me try:

A multi-player accessible live-action deep-strategy procedurally-generated sandbox roguelike with modern graphics and intuitive interface, with story from the makers of Planescape, and character design from the makers of Star Control 2, graphic architectural design by Carmack, graphic design from Pixar, and gameplay design from a clone custom-grown from a mixture of DNA extracted in the mid-90's from Molyneux, Meier, and Braybook. It would also have a lullaby mode that soothes you to sleep at night, and it goes out and gets the groceries for you from time to time if you are busy.

The sort of game that makes everyone on TIGSource look at it and say "screw it, my game design is nothing compared to that, so I'm not going to bother, I'll just spend my time playing this game over and over". The mass abandonment of dreams would utterly destroy TIGSource, but we all wouldn't mind, because we'd all be too busy playing this game to care.

An AI-driven swashbuckling intrigue romance RPG, where every time I start a game I get a new world of complicated NPC relationships to involve myself in, and dress myself in fabulous silks and velvets, wave my sword around, swing from chandeliers, kick evil wizards in the face, sweep ladies and gentlemen off their feet and learn their secrets in bed and occasionally get outsmarted, stabbed, and betrayed.

Except even that I'd get tired of after a while, I don't want to be stuck with only one game to play even if that game is awesome.

2.5D Fallout-style RPG with insanely long story and plot that is heavy on time travel and parallel dimensions (think: Chrono Trigger - JRPG elements + Isometric pixel art + Story writer high on magic mushrooms). Yep. I think that would make one hell of a game.

a pre half-life style FPS made to be played by at least two people, with cool monsters and cool weapons, and you run fast and can rocket jump and gib things, and maybe there are a few different classes to play as?
it has a good mix of hordes of weak enemies that go down to a full shotgun blast, and single/squads of medium enemies with good AI that have a variety of moves and can take a while to kill but they die to a direct rocket hit or rifle headshot, and giant boss monsters sometimes.

an any% run takes about 3 hours if you're fast but it's impossible to do a 100% run in less than 15

or maybe some kind of two player metroid or zelda

hot anime gurls fighting insane creatures from the underworld with giant swords and meteor storms. every once in a while, there should be a panty shot and their armor should protect them on one hand (otherwise the games too hard) but should not cover their whole bodies because theyre hot. the gaem is 16+ because of slight pornographic references but not too much because im no pervert. theres one tsundere and she really likes the protagonist (which is YOU) but she wont show it until the very end. she has brown hair and smells like lilac. eventually, there will be collectible traiding cards with pictures of all the girls so i can put them on my walls when the game is not running (maybe my pc crashes someday)

A game that has plenty of emergent storylines and hilarious failures. Closest I can think of right now is Dwarf Fortress. Or open ended permadeath MMOs (not the typical AAA MMO which try to put you on a track).

Ideally, it should only take about an hour a day to play to satisfaction, i.e. it's designed to discourage people from spending more than an hour a day on it.

Also, the sex and violence part should be handled tastefully. No excessive gore or nudity. Both have to be treated as a fair solution to everything, but not to the point where it becomes fan service or the reason anyone would pick up the game.

A game "like" Cave Story, Diddy's Kong Quest, Gimmick, etc.  Cave Story

A game where no matter the genre or style, utmost care is put into creating the best aesthetics possible, great sound and music, visual style, STORYTELLING.

A game that tries to create an experience for the player to immerse in, be it a text-only game or 3d with blending maps and caustics.

A game where players who play casually can have fun, but rewards those who find everything with that little extra that makes you feel it was worth it, and guides you so that the game itself is all you need to learn how to play it.

I played a lot of "my ideal games", commercial and not, and it is a window to the creators' vision of the world, it is a work of art.

A solitary game of exploration and discovery, where finding beautiful things and hearing wonderful sounds is more important than equipment and crafting. One way an ideal game could surprise me with NPCs or online players, as long as they don't speak!

I guess you could say my perfect game would be a mix of Proteus, Minecraft and Journey...

Ikaruga with a more Shadow of the Colossus feel with a FFVIII style story.
